Staying on track with a wedding coming up

There is a bridal shower for my cousin this coming weekend at a nice restaurant, and then her wedding is about a month away. I don't want to be "that person" not eating at the party because everything is high calorie, but I also want to stay under my calorie goals. Any advice on how to stay on track, while still enjoying the parties?

What works for me is to look at my calories over the course of a week, not a single day. So for the weeks where there is a wedding-related event, I would simply leave a larger deficit on the other days during the week, either through eating fewer calories on those days (obviously not crazy lower where I would be putting my health in danger) or adding in extra exercise. That way on the day of the event, I would have plenty of extra calories available where I could eat and drink at the party without completely blowing my calorie deficit for the week. I still watch my portion sizes, but I make sure to eat what I want since it's not an everyday occurrence. Depending on how much I indulge, I may not necessarily lose as much or any weight that week, but it helps me to avoid a gain.

I would do some research before the event and see if you can find the menu online. Usually they have some calorie information so you can see exactly what you are going to eat and have smaller meals the rest of the day so that you have those extra calories. If you go with a salad ask for the dressing on the side so that you can use only a small portion of it to lower the calories even more. I would also try and get a good work out in that day so you have even more calories to work with.

Even if you can't get it to fit exactly, if it's okay a few hundred calories it won't totally derail you. Put in a little more effort to have a bigger deficit a couple days before and a couple days after and you will be right back on track. This is a special time for your family so you want to enjoy it.
