It's not a heat rate monitor - it measures skin temperature or something to track your daily calories you burn. There is a monthly fee.

I've never had one because I don't like wearing a gigantic device on my arm. I have the fitbit instead - discrete and no monthly fee. It tracks your calories based on steps.

It has a 3-axis accelerometer, a skin temp sensor, and some type of "galvanic differential" device. It basically takes a bunch of readings off your arm to estimate not only steps taken, but also calories burned doing ANY activity. If you are bike riding, the best bet is to swap it from your left arm to your right leg.

If all you want is a step counter to estimate calorie burn, go with something like a Fitbit.

If you want something that ESTIMATES calorie burn during steady state cardio, go with a heart rate monitor.

If you want something that gives you step count and a pretty decent estimate of calories burned throughout the entire day over all types of activities, go with the Bodymedia.

The main reason I chose the Bodymedia over a Fitbit is I do a lot of hiking in mountains. I didn't think that a fitbit would give me a good calorie burn estimate for the amount of energy I was using due to pack weight and elevation change. If all you are going to do is walk around the duck pond at lunch, you'd be fine with the Fitbit.

One caveat about the Bodymedia... they just got bought by Jawbone, so what is happening with existing products and support is unknown.
