JUST EMOTIONALLY ATE...help

I emotionally ate so much just now! I've been doing so good for almost two weeks but someone got me very heated and I turned to food. How do you stop yourself from emotionally eating? I eat when I'm angry, don't eat when sad.

  • Usually I can sense that I am going to turn to food to help "fix" my problems, so I try to leave the kitchen and do something else, like take a power walk, go to my room and do my nails or homework or something of that nature, or I call/text a friend, sometimes I'll even bake something (I never eat anything I make... it just doesn't appeal to me). If I'm actually hungry, I'll make myself some toast and some tea or hot chocolate, but I always try to restrain myself as much as possible from bingeing/emotional eating. Hope this helps give you some ideas! It's always helpful to channel that energy into working out or something else :)

Do you have someone to help keep you accountable/ listen when you get the urge to eat to help fix a problem? Agree with Tylee - separate yourself from the kitchen/ source of food and occupy yourself with other activities. Sorry your having a bad day - glad you are reaching out to the community here. Try and get back into your routine again tomorrow. Don't let the source of today's issue jeopardize your goals or undo all the good you have done for yourself! Forgive and move forward.

Thanks everyone! I need that nano second to make me think of something else to do besides grab food. That nano second is so hard to manipulate!!! Advice appreciated and I thought gum puts on weight from the studies I've read...who knows.

Are you getting your "studies" from Mercola?
  • Truthfully, as strange as this might sound after a bad day, when I am at home, ready to snack my face off to ease the stress, I listen to this spoken word poem by Shane Koyczan called " instructions for a bad day" it's about six minutes long, helps me get calm, even when I am angry, and I can just suck up the day and think about something other than food. Works every time for me, at least.

+1 on the power walk. Great way to let off some steam. Its actually two fold, your already mad, so your heart rate is up, so its also a great way to burn some cals along with the emotional steam.
