Hey Guys

Would love to hear about the banner ads you see when you log in to myfitnesspal - I get a huge banner of doughnuts - makes it hard to stay motivated seeing those yummy doughnuts everyday!!

Cheers
Diana

This topic has been raised uncoutable times. MFP doesn't have control of what ads get displayed. If you don't like the ads you're seeing, install ad-blocker and you wont see them.

[edit: sorry, I shouldn't be so terse. This topic does come up a lot though, and even though your comments are quite harmless I read it with all the baggage of this discussion over the past year. Please don't take offense, but I do recommend adblock if the adds bug you.]

MFP doesn't actually pick the ads -they're based on words/phrases on the MFP pages you're visiting (possibly based on cookies on your computer, too - not sure about that one). Think of it this way - you'll be tempted in the real world, so this is good practice ignoring temptation! The ads keep this site free, so they don't bother me at all.

I was thinking the same thing....pretty silly advertising foods like that on a site like this. :grumble: but it's not like they would be choosing to display those ads and you couldn't expect them to have no ads at all so you just gotta ignore it...makes you tougher

The ads are pretty funny. I get a LOT of laughing cow cheese ads, but I eat a wedge of creamy swiss a few times a week, so I guess big brother is aware of my likes and dislikes. Of course that doesn't explain the "Your baby can read" ads ha!

Seriously though I really appreciate being able to use this site for free, so I try and click on a couple ads everyday so that MFP can keep ad revenue up. I mean...I'm not really buying anything on these websites, but the people putting the ads out do notice how many clicks they get.
  • I keep getting Ironman dominator ads. This site knows exactly who I am!

HA!!! no kidding! those donut ads just kill me! HA!
  • usually i have the fat girl who gets skinnier and skinner. or the "secret to a flat stomach. one simple rule" or something like that. tonight i have google and burt's bees.

i dont pay much attention to them. like others have said, MFP doesn't control what ads are put up. and to me, its no worse then the sonic, mcdonalds, taco mayo etc etc etc commercials that are on TV! :)
  • Chill....I have only been using this site for a couple of weeks so haven't gone through all the history in the forums....!!! Its just a bit of fun, no need to be angry - I am not complaining - its just kind of ironic that a website set up to promote health and fitness is earning its income from advertising doughnuts.........

Use Firefox browser with AdBlock and you won't see any ads. That easy.

I get the doughnuts banner too!!!!!! Extremely annoying!!!! I get a vibroplate add also. Mainly healthy adds but every day that doughnut one comes up!!! :explode:
  • About these ads, if you see something interesting be sure and click through. That is how the site gets paid. It does not hurt and you might find something you really need.
  • I clinked through a Timex ad, it takes me to a facebook timex page. I click like and now I can find the Timex stuff really easily. This is one of the HRM's I am considering. Pretty cool. And guess what, the donut ad is on the timex page!

I must be SUPER healthy then!!!!! (not!) NHS: Walk4Life, Kellogs's Special K, PPP Healthcare and a Local Bootcamp, Tesco diets 4 weeks Free, Best Way to Lose Weight and a Wellness Coach, Nuffield Health.......

Several sites I know I have previously looked at so presuming the cookies are enabled.... it also shows local adds too...... I agree.... bring'em on and keep it free!!!!
  • The ads definitely depend on you recent web activity - I was researching a new washing machine and for a couple of days I got nothing ads for - yes washing machines!

As someone else said you should click on a few ads - no purchase required - the click alone helps pay the bills for this site and keep it free. So Sorry all you adblock fans but you are free-loaders if we all followed your example this and many other free ad supported resources would cease to exist.
