Substitute for oil in cooking

Hi everyone. I have done a few searches and have not really found anything that answers my question so I thought I would just ask. I am looking for an oil substitute for cooking, not baking as I use unsweetened applesauce for that with great success. For example I have a chickpea recipe that I love that calls for 1 cup of oil. The last time that I made it, first time since I have started my new lifestyle, I used 1/2 cup instead and it was okay but I wouldn't want to take anymore out without replacing it with something. While losing 1/2 cup of oil is saving a lot of calories that is still leaving a lot of "useless" calories in that other 1/2 cup. So other than just reducing the amount you use or using Pam spray for say cooking an egg instead of a bunch of oil, do you have any tips on what to use instead? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I use xanthan gum mixed with water to the consistency of oil. Works ok in homade salad dressings as a filler but i dont know how well it would work for hot foods.0
