Long-lasting soreness and fatigue

I think this may just be how my body is, but if I don't work out for an extended period of time and I start strength training again, it usually takes me nearly two weeks to get back into it. The muscles I work will not only be sore for upwards of 5 days, but they are fatigued. I go through the recovery protein drinks, hot showers, lots of Advil, etc. But nothing seems to help. It's just very frustrating for me as it kills a lot of time when I am trying to get back into shape.

Would love to hear some ideas how to combat this or why I may suffer from this annoyance.
