Is it okay to go to bed hungry?

Most days I go to bed with my tummy rumbling, my thinking being that if I am asleep I won't know I'm hungry. I don't eat after about 6pm, and go to bed around 10-11pm. It doesn't bother me going to bed hungry and i am losing weight, I just wondered if it's healthy to do so, by the time I get up I generally haven't eaten for 12-14 hours and I know your body does a lot of wonderful things while you sleep. Do you think I should introduce 'supper'?

I, personally, am against it. Why the 6PM rule? Have a snack if you are hungry.

It's fine to eat whenever you want. It makes no difference. Also, your 12-14 hour fast is good for you. Look up Intermittent Fasting. It's exciting.

If your calories are set correctly and you are choosing mostly nutrient dense food with a lot of volume, there is no reason to be hungry. That doesn't sound very sustainable over the rest of your life. I always save enough calories for 100-150 calories in the evening. And the day usually ends with my nibbling a snack-size York Peppermint Patty (50 calories) around 9:00 p.m.

Do whatever works for you. . . but there is no reason to be hungry or to arbitrarily decide not to eat after 6:00 pm.

It is okay to be hungry, but only if you are getting enough nutrition and calories. If you're going to bed hungry because you're not eating enough, I would suggest that is bad. Sometimes hunger isn't really hunger but boredom, or some other psychological item, not real hunger. But if you're truly hungry every night, you are probably not eating enough.

While IF (intermittent fasting) is perfectly viable, definitely do it with knowledge and with nutrition! Don't, however, pick some arbitrary time like 6 pm and think you can't eat after that. It's silly. A calorie doesn't turn into a pumpkin after a set time!

    Agree.

Find some healthy snacks like fruit or some nuts if you determine you really are hungry.

The reason I don't eat after 6 is purely because that's when we eat our evening meal, I generally eat to my calorie allowance or just under and eat a variety of food, I have no specific craving, just have a grumbly tum around 10pm, I vaguely remember reading something about not sleeping on your food. I think after listening to you guys i'll start having a snack. It's all a learning curve for me, I'm finally listening to my body after all these fat years!

    Thanks guys :)

My trainer has told me it is OK to be a little bit hungry all the time. As long as you are getting the correct calorie level, it just takes time for your brain and body to adjust.

It worked for me for the 30lbs I lost last year.

Good thoughts: If you feel a little hungry, just tell yourself you are eating your body instead. Picture the pounds melting away.

Oh, and he said to eat dinner early if possible (6pm ish) and not to eat afterwards.

I go to bed between 12 and 1am.

If I am hungry before bed I have a salt free rice cake with PB on it. Only 90 calories total. Yum Yum and fills that hungry feeling.
  • Before bed I have unprocessed cocoa with semi skimmed milk and 1 tsp of xylitol. It takes the edge of my hunger and the warm cocoa is very high in bioflavonoids and scientific studies show it helps with the quality of the skin if taken often over time!
  • Current research has shown that it doesn't matter when you eat throughout the day, as long as you reach your calorie goal. There is no reason to not eat before going to bed or after a certain time.

so save a little calorie room and have a snack before bed.

That being said, I went to bed hungry Saturday night since I was too lazy to make myself something to eat. (I don't have anything at home that doesn't require some sort of prep, I just don't like snack foods. Even cheese and crackers takes prep work).
  • I usually have a banana before bed to quell the rumbling. :)
