Is a calorie a calorie?

Is a calorie of fresh fruit and vegetables really just the same in terms of weight loss as a calorie of fast food? I am aware of various diets that do not limit fresh vegetables and sometimes even fruit. However as a vegetarian trying to eat clean I can rack up a lot of calories even just by having home made veggie soup or a big salad. I will say that I do take some oil on my salads or avocado to better extract the vitamins from green leafy veg.

I have an inflammatory health issue and so I want to both lose weight and at the same time be getting a lot of antioxidants in my food however I feel like if I stick to my calorie limit I might not meet my (personal) targets for consuming nutrient rich food such as veggies, nuts, fruit. grains like quinoa, a green smoothie with fruits, veggies and some extras like hemp protein powder and hemp oil.

Is a calorie just a calorie no matter what it is or are certain foods more permissible?

A calorie is a unit of measurement.

Nutrients (macro and micro) are contained in foods and you need a certain amount of them for health reasons.

Weight loss is largely governed by calories in/out.
