Net Calories

I have question about how much food I need to be consuming to keep my metabolism firing. I usually eat around 1400-1600 total calories each (sometimes less, but never more) but I usually burn 450-600 calories from exercise each day as well. So my question is this: Should my Total calories be over 1200, or should my Net calories be over 1200?

Look at net not total calories. If you are exercising then aim to eat your net goal for the day/week (however you are doing it).
If you eat 1600 and burn 600 per day then your net is 1000, which is lower than your Basal Metabolic Rate and provides too little calories (and nutrients) for your body.0 -
Your net calories should be over 1200.
ETA: it's not going to hurt you to be under 1200 net some days, but on average you should be higher.0
