is overtraining a real cause of weight gain?

This is something I keep hearing: when people hit a plateau or randomly gain a couple of pounds despite eating clean and really pushing themselves, there always seems to be talk of "overtraining."
I'm just not sure if I understand this. For example, when guys come back from SEAL training, they're never chunky. Perhaps the thought is that overtraining weight is related to water retention and cortisol?

Um...no. The only gains that training can cause is water weight, and that doesn't last.0

No. If they are gaining weight they are eating too much. Doesn't matter if they eat clean or eat junk, they are eating too much. If it is a temporary couple of pound gain it's water retention.0
