So, to make the looonnng story short I went to GNC in search of a protien shake that doesn't contain that Splenda stuff... and the guy told me there's only one protien drink that doesn't have the stuff.. then he told me that muscle milk is the worst stuff b/c they use things like lead and even arsinc. He said that if you drink more then 4 a week your body will have lethal amounts of metals in it... Say WHa?????? I thought this stuff was good for you... but then again.. it's got that fake sugar stuff in it.

Has anyone else heard of this? I've noticed a heavy after taste with the muscle milk.. I thought it was that fake sugar... (?)

I don't think they guy was trying to sell me stuff... I didn't buy anything and he even wrote down the name of the whey protien shake mix that only has like 6 or 7 ingredence so I could go on-line and find it in smaller containers for a lot less money then what GNC is charging.

Any of you have thoughts on this?? I"m thinking I'll just skip the after gym protien stuff all together and go for real food instead... but I like the idea of getting that good for you whey protien.... just not sure what the best thing is for my body.

Thanks!!

I've heard a lot of stories about natural health products containing lead and other heavy metals. The problem with stuff like Muscle Milk and other "natural" source stuff is that it isn't really very closely regulated... just because it may be FDA-approved doesn't mean it's safe to consume. I understand that it's hard to get protein in some cases (especially when you've got a big protein goal), but I'd recommend that you get protein from natural sources like meat/poultry/fish, rather than "natural" (but still processed) products.

I have no idea about muscle milk, but if you're interested in a protein powder that's free of artificial sugar, is vegan, organic, gluten-free, soy-free, preservative free, and that mixes well with smoothies or even just shaken up with milk, I'd recommend this:

    http://www.gardenoflife.com/ProductsforLife/SUPPLEMENTS/FoundationalNutrition/RAWProtein/tabid/1894/Default.aspx

It's called Raw Protein by Garden of Life. It's the best protein powder I found, and after using it for a few weeks I'd highly recommend it.

It's NOT flavored, but it really doesn't have a taste by itself, so it mixes well with other things. I mix it with milk, some unsweetened baking cocoa and I enjoy it. I also mix it in with my smoothies. It's not too gritty and doesn't leave an aftertaste.

Since splenda came out, there's been a lot of information suggesting it's not as good for us as the company claims. Here's some info I found:

    http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2008/09/splenda_study.html
    http://www.womentowomen.com/healthyweight/splenda.aspx

There's a lot more out there. Some people have found Splenda (Sucralose) upsets their system. From what I've heard Stevia sweeteners (made from the Stevia plant) is the most natural sweetener available, but you have to be careful because some of the stevia products out there have other stuff mixed in, and the methods by which they make it end up with a highly refined sweetener that's not much better than some of the other alternatives. 100% stevia sweetener is best, but I don't know that I've seen that in stores.

Information on Splenda. Just eat real raw sugar.......in small amounts. I've come to the conclusion that if it's overly processed it's probably not so good for the system; although I use VEGA (http://myvega.com/) because in the research I have done it is the closest thing to raw/chemical free that I can find and it is quick to make, just add water and shake.

I use Stevia. I grow my own plants. Like others have mention, there are Stevia brands out there that have other ingredients in them. I can also buy pure liquid Stevia at my co op and local health food stores. It's really quite tasty. Or just consume raw sugar itself. There has been a lot of research on the potential harm Splenda causes. I know I know, everything can kill ya, but Splenda's deal is that it's in A LOT of products and large consumptions of it have been known to cause cancers in lab animals. I had a biology professor spend some time doing research on it so it became part of a few lectures of his Just my two cents. I am sure I still consume lots that's not great for me, I am by no means a pure and natural eater.

If you're just trying to find a better PWO protein source, there are only about oh..1000 better choices than muscle milk. 18g of fat? Or it used to be when I looked at it a few years back. There are a lot of protein powders that are great for dieters, that don't include a bunch of junk filler product. Go here http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/proteinfinder.htm and search for protein under 3g fat and under whatever carb serving your looking for, literally, a whole lot of results. Or, just get this http://www.atlargenutrition.com/nutrition_detail.php?products_id=1 and be happy knowing you bought a quality product used all around the world.

the guys at GNC work off commision they are always trying to sell you something, I work at Vitamin Shoppe and yes consumer reports did come out with a article that there are certain amounts of metals in certain protein powders. I doubt muscle milk is going to make you have crazy amounts of metals in your body. I drink it occasionally and feel fine. There is also a allowable amount of metals in our drinking water (I guess unless you always drink bottle water you don't have to worry about it)
    Just use your best judgement.
