Do you still get sore?

Noob question. I've been working out (cario + weights) now for 4-5 months, 3x week. Each Monday I increase my cardio level of intensity, but not my weights since I always feel the burn and reach failure around 15-20 reps.

I've always been sore the next day. If I'm not, does that mean I need to increase weights (even more) or is my body just finally getting used to it? Today is the first day I haven't been sore (ironically even though I did increase weight amount yesterday)

Thanks!

DOMS have nothing to do with progress. If you have been lifting for 4-5 months it's a little strange you haven't increased your lifts though (if I am understanding your post correctly)

I used to never get DOMS on SL and had amazing progress with it for the year I ran it.
Now on PHAT and I have been hurting everyday, 5 days a week for a month now

I would definitely recommend lowering your reps and going heavier. You will notice more progress at lower reps but higher weight. 8-12 reps is more than enough for most exercises, your big compund lifts will get enough muscle recruitment with a few sets of 3-5 reps

    ^This.

Some routines are just like this.

I did full-body 3x a week for a long time and never got sore. Now I'm doing an upper/lower split and feel like an old man most of the week!

You need to get on a intelligently laid out beginners programme with progression and recovery built into the schedule.

Soreness isn't really the indicator of progress or lack thereof...
  • Good stuff, thanks everyone.

Sure...in fact, I'm sore today after lifting last night for the first time in about a week. Worried what tomorrow will be like if I'm already sore today :frown:

I continue to have soreness. Thankfully, my recovery time is much faster. When I first started lifting a year ago, squat day rendered me hobbling for almost a week. Nowadays, I am sore for maybe the next day (DO NOT WEAR HEELS AFTER SQUAT DAY.), but not to the level of hobbling around the office. I love my soreness, it tells me I am working.
  • Yes, I still get sore. Especially so if I work extra hard or come back to something I haven't done in a while. I find that if I do a proper cool down and stretch after cardio I am much less likely to be sore. It definitely helps.

Soreness is soreness.... it is neither good or bad.

Pain is weakness leaving the body.

    Sweat is fat crying.

    Best!
  • I don't get sore that much anymore. I've been to the gym 15 days in a row now, which is way more than I've ever gone in a row. I'm not slacking for sure, and I'm not sore today except for a slight soreness in my back, which is likely due to sleeping on the couch.
