Bored at the gym

Hi,

So I have been doing the same routine for the last 8 weeks where it had three different days of exercises. I have found that I am now bored with this routine that I got from my trainer last year and not sure how to change it up. Since I do a day of weights and cardio and then cardio the next day and then repeat. I was thinking about doing group fitness classes, but I dislike working out with other people in a group setting mostly cause I don't like being watched while working out I guess. I was just wondering if anyone had any other suggestions for making things more interesting. As well I have tried other routines and just can't seem to get into them. Any sites that have good routines would be nice as well. Since I am trying to lose body fat and get toned.

Thank you

Hi. I think if you try a fitness class you will be focused so much on your own routine that you will get it that others are doing the same thing. If I look at another member during a class its only cause I might not have a good view at that moment of the instructors so just seeing what the routine is..

Have you thought about getting a book like New Rules of Lifting for Women or Stronglifts and following a program like that at the gym?

Also, for what it's worth, NOBODY is watching you in a group exercise class! Everyone is focused on their own thing (trying to keep up, watching the instructor, looking at their own form in the mirror to make sure they're doing it right, etc). Don't let that deter you if you've been wanting to try one out. :)
  • I'm getting to that point myself. I don't workout with a trainer anymore so I need to find ways to switch it up before I surrender in boredom. I am going to pick up a copy of "The New Rules of Lifting for Women: Lift Like a Man, Look Like a Goddess," I'll let you know how it goes :) Send me a FR if you'd like.

I am on week 3 of Jamie Eason's LiveFit Trainer. Her workouts are great (meaning I feel the burn and am sore the next day, which I am taking as good signs)...and she varies them every few week so you get some variety. You can get the plan for free here:

Also, in the past I have done BodyPump and Barre classes. I love both of them...but you do have to workout in a group unless you get videos and do them at home.

What does your workout look like? What is your lifting and cardio routine?

Without knowing this, it's hard to make recommendations -- but know little, I'd say start exploring new cardio options. If you're just running, throw in some rowing or jump rope or learn to box. Take a spin class (trust me -- no one's looking at you in a spin class, they're all too busy dying), swim if there's a pool, or create an interval routine using box jumps, training ropes, etc.

    Best of luck!

    Get a real program

    New Rules of Lifting
    Strong Lifts
    Starting Strength
    Strong Curves

There is enough variety in the PROGRESSION that you shouldn't be bored.

There are two ways to be bored at the gym- 1.) you are doing teh same thing over and over again
2.) you aren't lifting anything different.

so either change what you are doing
    OR
    change the weight you lift.

Most power lifters- do the same lifts- the variety comes from the progression.

Whenever I see someone post "I do weights" to describe their current program, I pretty much assume that you're using mostly machines and light weights, probably with a ton of reps, and not really challenging yourself and progressing much. Probably too much isolation work, not seeing great results, and I understand why that's boring. If this is true of what you've been doing, it's time to ditch everything you've been doing with weights and replace it with a real strength program- it's challenging and not at all boring, and probably way more simple (not easy) than what you've been doing, and you'll finally start getting the results you want.

It's a 3day a week program, on the alternate days you can do a variety of things, whatever you want. Running, swimming, yoga classes, zumba, play raquetball, spinning, whatever you like, really (except true HIIT or more weight lifting).

I say try a class, you just might like it.

You feel like an idiot the first time because you don't know the routine or steps as well as the regulars, but it gets easier, and you will pick up the moves. And really, none of them are looking at you, or judging you: most of us are too busy feeling stupid and judging ourselves to bother judging others.

And if you hate it, you hate it and can move on to something different. There is so much out there to offer these days at the gym.

    2 suggestions:

    1. I also hate fitness classes, I leave them feeling like complete crap. But I LOVE spin class. It's totally at your own pace, no one knows what gear you set your bike to, and the lights are turned down and it's awesome. I also like crossfit style classes for the same reason - you do it all at your own pace, you're not trying to keep up with anyone else and no one else is paying any attention to you.

    2. Pinterest - I find new variations of workouts I can do on my own all over pinterest, and I love it. I take my phone to the gym and pick my workout for the day and do it. It's awesome. You can find any kind of work out you're looking for.
