Bellringing - calories burnt?

Hi - Does anyone know approximately how many calories are used per hour when bellringing? I've looked on google and can't find anything.

    Thanks for the replies so far. I think may be I should have clarified what I meant be bellringing for those on the other side of the pond.

    I meant ringing church bells in ye merry olde England.

    why would you want to count this as excercise???? Does it raise your HR while ringing them, you are breathless, working in your cardio zone???

    Why not consider it a fun thing and not everything in life has to be counted. I brush my teeth, I sure don't count that....I go clubbing, I sure don't count that, that's a fun time, I can't imagine why I'd even consider adding that in as excercise. You're not the only one looking to do this lately so don't take my response to much to heart. But when I hear others ask how much does washing dishes use in excercise??? whaaaaaaaaaa??

    I think maybe they are just new and trying to figure things out. I don't record anything but my Wii exercise and my walks at night but maybe some people are just misinformed. I haven't been on here long but the repetitive question marks might make feel some like they are being made fun of and not really supported. I find this site super supportive and I hope the OP understands.

    British bellringing in the towers involves weighted bells and this art/activity is actually where the weights known as dumbbells came from, since the ringers had to practice with heavier weights in order to be able to ring their own bells.

    To me it's an activity that is very athletic and ringers sustain injuries, some serious. Don't know the weights of the bells in question, but the British Medical Journal did an article on bell ringer injuries in 1990.

    I think you'd have to log the weight element and the cardio element separately. Find a weight training exercise with a similar motion and use that with the weight of the bell. Maybe that machine where you pull the handle down to shoulder level from over your head? Then any movement that raises your heart rate, find a similar cardio exercise and enter in the time.
  • Church bells can weigh anything up to about four tons, and ringing bells is certainly very good cardio exercise. I've been told that it might be equivalent to swimming i.e. about 300 calories for 20 minutes continuous ringing.

    I ring bells for church too and it is a workout not just for your arms, you use a lot of muscles you aren't even aware of while ringing bells. We practice an hour a week and it definately "counts". Thanks for posting this! I just googled it and couldn't find anything either!
  • Did any one ever find how many calories are used when bellringing? I rang a quarter peal last night and would love to know.

  • The Boots website doesnt say if its referring to hand bells or Tower bells! I am starting Tower bell ringing this evening and would love to know.
