    Don't forget the #1 cause of both weight fluctuations and anxiety about weight fluctuations -- being female! Hormones do crazy **** to your body and sometimes you just have to put up with it. Keep active, keep eating healthy, and try not to weigh yourself more than once a week.
  • I allow myself a window of 5 lbs. I don't weight myself every day. I do it once a week or every two weeks. Don't stress over it.

    If your calories are on point... it's water and poop. Seriously. I can fluctuate between one and five pounds DAILY, sometimes in the SAME day. I also read in a thread, don't remember the name, about when you start eating at maintenance your body will naturally hold on to more water and glycogen stores. It's not fat. :-)
  • that's why you don't weigh yourself every single day, you body naturally does that, especially if your a woman....why watch the scale everyday, your not suppose to lose weight every day anyway.....best advice, weigh just once a week same time, same place, same clothing......good luck

    I am in maintenance and I have been weighing myself daily for the past 90 days - I'm an engineer and I like charts and graphs and such. My weight has fluctuated up to 5 pounds a day due to water retention, overeating, TOM... you name it. It is totally normal and part of the maintenance process. The red line is my maintenance level. The two recent highs are Christmas Day and New Year's Day, and the recent low (too low) was right after I had to put my cat to sleep.

    Fluctuations are a bugger. I felt great about losing more, then was right back up 2 pounds the next day. I'm going to avoid weighing myself today though because I feel bloated and "fluffy" as my partner calls it, lol.

    Measurements can help, one time I had the 2 pound jump I was able to see no, I hadn't lost the shrinkage on my belly, so the gain must have been muscle.

    Trust when you're doing the right things, and track other goals as well (hey, I feel stronger! I can do more reps! I ran farther! I didn't break a sweat this time! etc).

    Weighing yourself daily for a month or so can be a big help because you'll learn what variation is normal for you.

    But, some people find it too stressful. Those people should pick a variance range (say +/- 5lbs) and weigh weekly or monthly instead.

    My understanding is that during a three day cycle the body burns fat, fluid builds up and it flushes out by day three...good news.
    So depending when you weigh yourself weight will vary. Don't be discouraged.

    I have an app on my iphone called "True Weight." It's free. You can record your weight each day and after a period of time it averages out the bumps for you, giving you your 'true" or average weight. My actual weight goes up and down in a 6 pound window, but the average is actually the same. (Unfortunatey for me, since I'm not actually trying to maintain yet.) Using a tool like that could allow you to weigh every day but help you to see the big picture, rather than responding to each daily number.

    Weigh yourself once a week on the same day every week. Then make a chart that you can update after each weight in. I found this really motivating and reliable. Otherwise I think I would have given up long ago if I was weighing myself everyday.

    Hi, So I have looked up a bunch about weight fluctuation but I really don't understand at which point it becomes actually weight gain. I weighed myself on monday and I was 140.8, on Tuesday I had bounced up to 141.8 and now this morning I'm at 142!! Why am I gaining weight? If it was a fluctuation shouldn't it have gone down by now?
    I'm pretty sure my diary is public so you can take a look at that. Also I finished my TOM on saturday so I know thats not the cause.
    Someone please help because I had just reached my goal weight and am feeling very discouraged.
    Also on a weekly basis what is the average weight fluctuation?

    Let me just call you and others out who keep saying "don't weigh yourself every day". Why do you feel that way? Or what led you to believe in not checking your weight on a daily basis?

    Do we not check the temperature every day? The stock market? Do we not check the clock to see what time it is? Do we not look at our gas guage every time we get in the car? Check our tire pressure on a regular basis?

    What's wrong with checking weight daily? Seriously - what could go wrong by checking?

    Could we not spot a trend (weight gain, or loss) by a daily check? Can we not micro-manage things by having a more up to date reading than once a week, or once a month? True - a trendline could be measured every day, every week, every month, every year, every decade - but seriously: What is wrong with a daily weigh in? The scale is right there on the floor? Is it going to throw us off our daily routine to step on it and get a number before we go about our daily business?

    Just want to know valid reasons why those of you who don't advocate a daily weigh in spout off on these boards with the comment "don't weigh yourself daily".

    Speak...and validate the why...

    I advocate for weighing every day - I R a science nerd and numbers comfort me :laugh:

    But, there is a good reason not to weigh every day. Some people flip out when they see the scale go up, even if they know that they didn't eat enough to have gained a pound or two of fat in a day. Not a few of those people decide to just give up because they get so discouraged. If someone thinks that they are one of these people, they're much better off weighing less frequently. Sure, that means they can get farther off track before catching it, but not THAT much off unless they're binging like mad. And then they'd know they were off track without stepping on any scale.

    As stated in my response weighing every day would be very frustrating as I have a lot to lose and it would be discouraging. I am aware that weight fluctuates but seeing the numbers go up when you are trying hard to make them go down can be defeating. For me it's for psychological reasons that I know I would be disappointed seeing numbers go up even if I know in my mind that it's water weight or some other female hormonal issue. Some that are already fit and working towards certain goals for sports or some other reason may want to weigh every day to increase proteins when needed etc etc etc. I know that there are many on here that are very athletic and a lot of what they do is for maintenance or to meet certain requirements. But we are not all here for that reason and may never be. The advice is made for the sake of OP who is about to cry over weight fluctuations...there is no reason to put yourself through that...many of us have self esteem issues due to our weight already why add to it? Just my opinion.

    You're just weighing to often. Pick a day of the week and weigh at the same time every week. If you weigh more you're gaining.

    Okay, enough about weighing yourself. Here's a few things not mentioned. First your body may be adjusting it's "set point". This is the weight in which your body needs to be at in order to function effieciently w/o all the crazy hunger and not eating enough business. Second, have you changed any medications or supplements? Whether taking a new drug or supplement OR not taking something can cause flucuations in our weight both ways. I was on Topomax for years for migraine and soon as i went off it I started gaining weight. Please think about these possiblities. Finally, drink water 1/2 your weight in ounces. For example if you weigh 120# drink 60 ounces of water per day. I helps flush out all those toxins.

    The same thing could happen to the OP by only weighing once per week as when weighing once per day. And by weighing only once per week, the ability to micro-manage/adjust calories in/calories out and adjusting exercise could be lost. And to watch the fluctuations based on food choice, sodium, hydration, plateaus and breaking through plateaus could all be missed as well.

    Whether one is in maintenance mode or in a loss or gain mode - I still am not seeing the positive effects of weighting less frequently. It takes 2 seconds and the information is simply one little road sign on the journey. Do you not look at your odometer while driving to know you still have 111 miles to go before you arrive in Chicago (or wherever)? Do you avoid looking at the road signs that tell you how far the next town is in miles or kilometers?

    2 lbs is not a big deal. I wouldn't be concerned until it got to 5 lbs. Then, I would start to get a little more strict with food; find something to cut out (for me it would be nightly chocolate) OR run a couple of minutes longer each day.

    I read a few of the responses (I don't know if anyone else mentioned this), but honestly, I can lose 2 lbs by going to the bathroom (if you know what I mean). I used to weigh myself everyday, then I cut back to every other, then once a week, I'm down to every 2 weeks, and shooting for once a month (on the first for some consistency).

    OMG!!! You gained .2 pounds !!! That's almost 4 ounces!!! :sad:

    Stop weighing yourself everyday and relax. Crying about a few ounces is silly.
    If you take the change out of your pocket before stepping on the scale it will probably go back to 141.8. If you go have a good poop it may even drop down to Tuesday's weight of 140.8
