Running/Gym shoe recommendations

Hey everyone -

So for my 40lb weightloss mini goal I promised myself a good pair of gym/running shoes. I have made it work thus far in some cheap sneakers from Target but it is time for an upgrade since I really am sticking this out! I don't run outside - but I do hike/speed walk on the mountain roads around our house, however I do have hiking boots I can use for that, so this would primarily be for a home gym - elliptical, recumbent bike, video workouts, that kind of thing. Any and all suggestions would be much appreciated!

Thanks :flowerforyou:

There is a BIG difference between gym shoes and running shoes. For what you describe you don't need, or want to spend the coin on running shoes. In fact, for what you're doing you don't need shoes to begin with, let alone anything special. I'd just pick up whatever pair of $30 athletic style shoe feels comfortable.

I would definitely recommend going to a specialist running shop, having your gait analysed and going from there.
You might be lucky and just be able to buy bog standard shoes, but you might have a gait that means you need some extra support (as do I).

Editing to say, sorry, read running, but can see you won't be doing that as such!

I just have a cheapie pair for in the gym (my running shoes are always muddy and gross!)

Although you don't really need anything particularly special for elliptical/walking/bike workouts, rewarding yourself with a nice comfy shoe is a great idea! I love giving myself something to look forward to as I progress in my goals. =) I treat myself to workout gear and gadgets as motivation, and it really works!

When I started training (running) my boyfriend bought me the shoes in my profile picture for Christmas - and I love them! Very cushy and comfortable. You can tell the difference between them and my old shoes, that's for sure. Worth every cent.

I would say for what you are doing you don't need an expensive running shoe, it would be a waste. You can still get a really nice shoe for what you are doing though if you want to spend the money. I would go to a store that deals specifically in fitting your for the right sneaker, and they will get you a training shoe that should give you good ankle support, with a flatter sole that has good mobility. Or you can just use what you have been using if you aren't having any problems with them, because sometimes using what works is the best thing overall with shoes. But I feel ya, sometimes it is nice just to have nice things.

I like the Nike Air Pegasus. Look on Nike.com or see if there is an outlet store near you.

I looove my Saucony Women's Grid Cohesion 5! They are so comfortable that I bought a pair for everyday wear (work, shopping, outside exercise) and a pair for the gym! They have great support and are comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

  • I seriously think the Reebok Nano 2.0 or 3.0 look fantastic for gym purposes - I just can't find any stores that carry them to try them on! They are adored by the Crossfit community, so I am thinking they'd be great for HIIT/weight workouts. From what I've read they are great for short distance runs too - like a mile or two. I'll report if I get to try them :)
