Toning on a Treadmill?

Is it safe to assume a person is toning their legs when running at an incline on a treadmill and toning their arms when running on a treadmill carrying weights?

Thoughts?

I run on the treadmill at an incline to train my body to run up hills.

People that run on a treadmill carrying weights? Well that's just dumb.
  • depends on the incline, speed, and duration of the run/walk. I wouldn't count on seeing a substantial difference so my overall answer would be no.... holding weights while running/walking is a waste of time

    Cardio...You are burning fat.
Lifting weights...you are toning and turning your body into a fat burning machine.

I wasn't exactly sure what "toning" means, so I looked it up:) Its basically exercise for the sake of building a muscular physique, with low levels of body fat, noticeable muscle definition and shape. So, my suggestion would be to do cardio (can be done on a treadmill) to burn calories, resistance training (weight lifting) to build some muscle, and a slight calorie deficit, because fat creates the soft look, rather than the "toned" look. Weight lifting alone might work, but I think doing cardio in addition to it works faster. Just not at the same time. Circuit training, ok, but I'd hate to see someone try to deadlift on a treadmill.

Definitely not safe to assume... I'd actually go so far as to say it's wrong.

Treadmill = cardio = fat loss

If you want to "tone" your legs try doing some squats with weight.
