If you want to start lifting there are a few programs out there that will help.
2 have books you can buy...New Rules of lifting for Women (NFOLFW) and Starting Strength (SS) I hear good things about both, I have also read NFOLFW gets complicated.
I personally do Strong Lifts 5x5 which is free and there is a great summary here
http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/4601-stronglifts-5x5-for-women *this group is great too..
I am not "new" to lifting so I didn't go see a personal trainer first for form advice, I did however and still do watch youtube videos and will be video taping mine to get someone to check it and give advice.
The suggestion for any woman starting out is to read up, start with an empty bar if you are new and work your way up...

If you've got a trainer who can show you the correct form, Stronglifts would be great for you. If not, I agree with the above poster, starting strength is a great read (the programmes are very similair). NROLFW is a good read but the programme is very, very complicated (was for me anyway - I was very new to lifting).
Strong curves is another great read - I don't do the programme but have added some of the exercises to my routine.0 -
Thank you for the information. I am going to get started soon. I have some hand weights but that is it.0

^^This. I just started and watching form videos (and videoing myself!!!) along with Starting Strength have been essential to getting the basics down. Starting Strength has a TON of good info. for basic lifts and more advanced lifts, so it will carry you for a while!0 -
