HI! I'm Valerie.
I joined when I got a smart phone about a month ago because I need to get healthier. Weight loss is great...but it's a beneficial side effect, so to speak.
I am 35, almost 36, with a family history of diabetes.
In my late 20's I was diagnosed with a thyroid issue. When they shut off my metabolism to lower the levels, it seems to have permanently reset about 15-20 lbs heavier. I can get down to within about 5 lbs of the weight was was in college...which was my healthiest. However, I can't seem to maintain. Within a month or so, I'm back up to btwn 160-165. I'm hoping this program will help me learn better eating habits by logging and then maintain a healthier BMI. I'm in the process of adopting an older child through DHR, so the healthier I am before introducing an 8-12 yr old into my home, the better!
Adding to the difficulty is a lot of back problems due to a car wreck several years back .... so if you have any exercise suggestions I'd love to hear them. I do yoga and swimming at the Y when I can, but a 6 day work week doesn't make it easy. There are some days when even swimming would not be physically possible. Some low impact home exercises that don't require a lot of equipment would be greatly appreciated.
I've been reading a lot on the board and I'm really encouraged by the wide range of users and the lack of "snippy" retorts I've seen so often on other boards.
So that's me in a nutshell.
