How to measure pasta and rice.....

Before or after cooking? I have never really known the answer to this and how the calories are figured out. Any insight will help!

the nutrional lable on the box is for dry. So if you can weigh your portion dry that is the best way to go.

Trust me 2oz of dry pasta is a lot more than 2oz of cooked pasta.

I would weigh it dry, cook it, then weigh it again so I can know what they ounces are for the cooked pasta. I only do that so I know when I make it again and I just weigh it on my plate I know I can use the calories for the 2oz of dry.

1/4 cup dry rice will give you about one cup of rice. As a rice lover I was skeptical a first, but it really is a lot of rice. This is from someone who use to eat at least 3 cups (cooked), now that is way too much.

My favorite are: black rice then basmati (brown and white rice).

Why have I never thought of this?? Such a good idea!! Thank you!

Always measure it dry. The finished weight will depend on how long it is cooked and how much water it absorbs. It will probably be different each time you cook it.

Always measure dry, and use a food scale.
  • I always multiply the calories per serving (dry) by the number of servings. (Ex. 200 calories per serving with 8 servings = 1600 total calories per box) After its cooked I serve them into equal portions. I may get 12 1 cup portions cooked. (1600 Calories / by my twelve 1 cup cooked portions = 133 calories per cooked cup)
