Weight training?

I workout at home and I have, for the most part, been using my elliptical about 4 days a week and have increased the levels as I got stronger. Since I have just been doing mainly cardio I am looking to add strength training to my workouts. I have seen many people discussing lifting, 5x5, new rules of lifting...and so on. It's all a little confusing to me and since I will be working out at home I'm not really sure what my options are out of the many programs out there. Any advise would be greatly appreciates...and how it has worked for you would be great also! :)

This is my advice. It's a great program.

Also, weights will not make you bulky, I promise.

Stronglifts, Starting Strength or New Rules Of Lifting. All three are very good. I personally didn't like NROL at all and started with SL and then did SS. Now on a 5 days Strength/Hypertrophy but to start off either of those 3 are good. Although personally I would get the SS book. A LOT of very important info on the basics and how to perform the movements with proper form.

Correct form is crucial to maximize strength gains and to minimize the risk of injury. Watching videos and reading books can't correct mistakes in your form.

Maybe look for a groupon or living social for a gym intro with personal training thrown in. Get started the right way and then continue on your own.

Good luck! I've been hooked for years! :)

I read New Rules. Not gonna lie, it's a lot for a beginner to take on. I started by selecting a few of the exercises suggested and then started slowing adding different exercises to my routine once I started getting comfortable with the equipment at the gym and the correct form. There is good information in it though.
