Great days, horrible nights. Help!

I notice a pattern in which I do well with my plan all day and at night I am having problems staying with my plan. I head to the sweets! Ugg! I really need to get over this. Any advice?

This is pretty common for a lot of people. At the end of the day, you're tired and resolve/willpower/whatever tends to flag.

Some people also just prefer eating more in the evening. I know I do. I found everything a lot easier when I started eating lighter during the day and allocating the majority of my calories for my evening meal and after dinner snacks. I have a big, satisfying meal, and I always have room for some chocolate (or cookies, ice cream or whatever). I just have it in an appropriate portion size that fits into my diary.

At first, yes I wanted more, but pretty soon I got used to smaller portions. I still crave more sometimes, but most of the time I'm completely happy & satisfied with the amount I have. I make sure I get enough protein and fibre during the day, and eat plenty of fruit, vegetables, nuts etc, so I'm not depriving myself of nutrients. So, maybe it's not you that needs to fit in with your plan: maybe you need to tweak your plan to better meet your needs/preferences.

Go read in bed and go to bed early.
  • I have the out of mind out of sight theory-remove them from your house first. At work we got treats from customers on the counter- now we keep them in the back office. I brig my own lunch because we have more treats in the break room-that is hard, but little portions and tell yourself to push harder in afternoon workout

I have this problem too. I tell myself "I'll start again tomorrow". Last night I was actually pouting because I was rooting around the kitchen for something chocolate at 9pm, and my husband stepped in. I was miffed because he was right and was stopping me from doing what I wanted, which was not good for me, he was gentile about it, but it pissed me off that I couldn't have it.

I'm not a big eater in the morning. I have heard that by having a satisfying, healthy breakfast it will help regulate you during the day.......that's all well and good, but evening comes and I'm shopping in the kitchen for my goodies.

We cleaned out the house of the snacks, except for healthy stuff...nuts, raisins, apples etc. but I knew there was chocolate milk out there.

Perhaps the reading in bed suggestion I'll try.

Put "plan appropriate" sweets in your home. I love Skinny Cow frozen treats, Vitalicious dark chocolate Vitatops. Whatever your sweet tooth, you can find a substitute. And get rid of the fattening stuff that throws you off plan.

This has always been my struggle. I can eat healthy all day, but once I get home from work, I can't control myself. I've been doing really well lately. I know it's probably not ideal, but I often try to save a good chunk of my calories for the evening. Then I can have a larger portion of dinner or a light dessert and still stay on track. I also try to cut myself off from eating after 8 p.m. unless I'm just starved.

Some things that help me with my sweets cravings - no sugar added applesauce, low fat ice creams, frozen grapes, strawberries

Glad to know I'm not the only one with this problem. Thanks for all of the suggestions! Love them. I did well last night and saved my calories for some additional fruit. I ran frozen banana and pineapple through my champion juicer with the blank screen and made an ice cream consistency dessert. It was great!

I have this same problem!!! Either I head for the sweets, or I eat bigger portions. I found that eating a larger portion of vegetables at night with my dinner and drinking extra water helps me curb that desire. Also a good thing to try if you can't kick the sweets at all is making sure you have calories left in your diet for like a skinny cow ice cream sandwich (yum!) or a kellogs fiber plus bar (the coconut ones taste exactly like a Samoa girl scout cookie)

I tend to eat more in the evenings. Like you, I like to have something sweet before I go to sleep. I started setting aside some calories for whatever treat I have planned for myself. That's helped me to be able to have a treat or two while staying within my goal for the day.

Before I started planning, if the call of the Oreo was too much to bear, I'd go have several. That'd result in me going over, feeling guilty, and kicking myself for not having more willpower. Then I decided to set aside enough calories to have 2 or 3 Oreos before bed. That worked out pretty well. I also found that (for me anyway) the sweets not being forbidden made it so the temptation wasn't as strong, and the 2 or 3 I set aside were just right.

    Good luck!
  • Sounds like me too. I get tired and hungry. Not always wanting sweets, but carbs. I have been heading to the fruits and veggies when I have been getting hungry at night.

I'm a horrible nocturnal grazer. Like many have said, plan your calories for the end of the day. I really load up on vegetables. I'll sometimes eat an entire package of frozen broccoli with some chicken. High fiber is my mantra. I also like a protein shake as a treat. A scoop of powder (chocolate for me), a cup of skim milk, a tsp of vanilla, ice cubes, blender on frappe' and there's your <300 calorie large milkshake!

Story of my life. And I've tried doing larger breakfasts and lunches to see if that would help, but usually those are the days when I go over by the most. I've just gotten into the habit of eating light during the day and saving up calories for nighttime snacking. It works for the most part.
