Wife needs help with WW and weight lifting

My wife is doing weight watchers and is having good progress while doing spin classes 3-4 days a week. She is wanting to possibly add some weight lifting to the mix to raise her metabolism and to start tightening up her muscles. Will the weight lifting cause her weight loss on the scale to stall if she continues to eat her points and do the spin classes? Thanks for input and advice.

    Weight lifting will definitely not stall your wife's progress on the scale; it matter of fact promote weight loss also. If she is new to weight lifting, start working on flexibility stretching and two body parts with two exercises. Hope you guys keep up the hard work.

    She may have a pause when she first starts a routine. The body, in adapting, will retain fluids and such. It's only temporary, but can be viewed as a setback to some.
  • Mixing cardio with resistance helps build muscle while still losing weight. There will be a greater chance for plateauing, I would recommend to include measuring different points on her body, like around the waist, hips, and neck as additional measures to help her out. The scale at one point will not budge; weight is weight, it does not separate the mass of body fat from muscle mass. Those additional measures will help clarify that she is gaining muscle as she still trying to burn the body fat.

    It's not going to 'raise her metabolism' and she could plateau for a while due to it but she should be doing it for the long term health benefits.

    I have been told by many trainers/ teachers that exercising will increase metabolism. As well as weightlifting continues to burn fat and calories many hours after workout vs cardio only about an hour.

    Yes, it burns calories. I thought you were referring to the often-stated 'muscle burns significantly more calories' thing. It's not significant, like 6 calories per day per pound.

    The EPOC, or afterburn effect, is often found to be insignificant, too.
