Mets??

Sorry if this is a silly question but can somebody explain what it means on the cardio machines in the gym when it has a figure for mets? Our gym has new owners and has had new machines put in, the old ones didn't have this so I haven't seen it before!

Just going off the top of my head, I recall a met being a measurement of workload based upon the body's expenditure of energy at rest.
Someone just sitting around would be at 1 met workload - if you're doing 5 mets of work, you're using roughly five times the energy you would at rest. I don't find such a measurement supremely helpful to those of us who would rather count calories generally, but it's kind of fun!0
