Ill join I guess lol. Im 24 and I started on my birthday this year in April. Im hoping that by my next birthday I will be at or under goal weight and I wont be shying away from the pictures. I realized that when my children look back on pictures of the first few years of there lives, I wont be in them. I shy away from the camera and my excuse is that Im the one taking the pictures but I think its mostly because I hated how big I was. Even 40 lbs lighter I still see the big girl and though Im still big I have a long way to go mentally and physically.

I feel the same way! My kids wont see me much in their pictures because i try to stay out of them also! From now on i will try my best to look my best so my kids can have memories of me0 -
If you don't mind a wise old man chiming in (turned 30 in Feb) good for all of you! After going way downhill through most of my 20's, I started making some gradual improvements a couple years ago, but really started getting healthy when I turned 30 this year. Looking back on spending my 20's as an out of shape blob, I do regret it. But on the bright side, I feel like I got my wake-up call and got things turned around while I was still young enough to do it fairly easily, and now I hope my good health and habits will stick with me through middle age and then the rest of my life, which is when a lot of people first start going downhill. Maybe that doesn't really mean much, just my way of looking at the bright side. Good job to everyone who is getting things on track even earlier than I did!0

I'm 26 here, so count me in. I got fat when I turned 20 (as fat as I am now after loosing 5 lbs, 170lbs). Then by the time I was 22, I had lost the weight and was down to 145. Well, I got fat again... I've been over 160 since January 2009, yikes. My goal is to get down to a slim 135 lbs (the last time I was this thin, I was 19). So far eating less hasn't been as grueling of a task as it used to be a year ago (maybe hormones changed or something). The weight seems to be coming off at a steady pace thus far, but I still have a long way to go.
I'm 5' 5" and a size 10. I'd like to get down to a size 6.0 -
awesome idea for a group. there are so many ages and reasons people are on the site. i just turned 25 and realized if i didn't change myself soon i would be really harming my health and hopes for starting a family.0

I'm 23, I weighed in at 214 lbs at my heaviest. Down to around 195. I've been gaining weight recently but the only thing I can think is that it's muscle because I'm not getting fatter. I was down to 179, and had a nice fast food binge a while back, and got back down to 188, but I've gained 7 lbs like I've said, but haven't gone over my daily calories in a while. Not sure what's up =/ kinda sad.0

I love that you said that!! i dont have any pics of my mom because she thought she was too heavy. Shes lost a lot of weight and now she feels she looks to old. But i love her the way she is! it makes me sad because when she does die all i will have in her art.. i would love some photos to look back on.0 -
I am 26, I have been as high as 200lbs right after my second child,, I was 170 after having my 4th but had made it back to 195 when I stumbled on to MFP App on my iPod after having a breakdown moment with a BMI calculator I found and I was Obese.. then and there I decided I would NOT hit 200lbs again!!! I started MFP on the 16th of Aug and as of today I am down 15lbs I am so ecstatic!!
Ok so whats my secret right nothing more then following my calorie goal and drinking lots of water and for those who think I kill my self for exercise NOPE I don't I started out Swimming 30min a day sometimes an hour.. I dance alot with my kids and just go out and walk and have fun add it to activity and keep going!!!

I am SO glad everyone responded so positively to this!!! I am 23 - but have been overweight since, well, I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure it started when I was around 18? Ha ha. Sad I can't even figure out when it started! I know I am very overweight (I'm, well, 212 at my last weigh in and I'm only 5'2"). As weird as it sounds, I'm a very curvy big girl, so it took sometime for me to really realize how big I had gotten (since I've always had a waist). I know from my earlier attempts at losing weight that going from 135 to 115, or 165 to 115, or 212 to 115 are all equally as challenging (one just might take longer than another!).
Interestingly enough, I'm a dance teacher, and I teach a "dancers conditioning" class, and I can do more sit-ups and push-ups than half my little skinny 14-yr-old students! So, it's not just about getting thin, it's about getting healthy! I'd like to try to learn more about all of you guys and gals! And for all you 29-yr-olds, yes, you're still in your twenties!!! Ha ha. I'm so glad I started this!
Also - a little more about me - I started this because I keep getting "off-the-wagon" and I know that all of us, in our twenties, all live a such a large variety of lives from stay at home moms and dads, to newly-weds, to college students (myself! I'll be graduating in December and starting my graduate work in January), to full-time work junkies! So, these are some of the hardest times to stay dedicated to a plan, especially, with so many things going on, which is why sometimes we all need that extra support!!! So who's with me... I AM NOT GOING TO BE FAT IN MY 30'S!!!0 -

Maybe to spark some conversation, what prompted all of you to decide to lose weight?
And also, how are you going about doing it?
The reason I decided to is because I went to the doctor and my blood pressure was taken and the nurse informed me it was bordering high. She suggested I look into lowering it. And then when I stood on the scale my heart dropped: 218. The heaviest I'd ever been. So I decided how I Was going to lower my blood pressure, I was going to lose weight.
Not only that, obesity runs in my family. I put on weight easily and I've always loved my starches and junk food.
I've gone about this by NOT going on a diet. I absolutely AM NOT on a diet. I'm just making healthier choices about what I eat. But if I want ice cream, I can still have it, I just have to have not pigged out all day. I decided I don't want to wholly deny myself anything, because there's too many times I've tried more extreme diets and given up after a week because of wanting something I couldn't have and giving in.
It's been 7 weeks now and 14 pounds are off. I think it's working!0 -

Great idea! I think the reason is soooo important... Well, so the first time I really started losing weight was when I joined Weight Watchers in May of 2009. As I've said before, I'm a dance teacher. I had a solo in recital in a cute (or so I thought) little red dress costume. When I dance, I always picture myself doing the moves as if I still weighed 115 pds like I did in high school. I seem to have the opposite of the "fat girl in the mirror" syndrome where you see a bigger girl than there really is when you look in the mirror (which is awful and hard for a lot of people, men and women!). I always saw myself as thinner than I really was, honestly. While I had to buy bigger clothes, and I could tell I was getting bigger, I had no idea the extent of it. Then, when I looked at the pictures of our recital of me dancing I was in shock. I bawled and bawled and bawled. I literally joined Weight Watchers that day. I lost about 12 lbs over the summer, but once school started I lost it completely and dropped out of WW. I was too stressed from school (well, I mean, that was my excuse at the time). Then in April of this year my grandmother passed away. I was incredibly close to my grandmother, as was my mother (it was her mom). She was 94, and was healthy and active until the day she died. She lived by herself (my aunt is a nurse and stopped by to see her daily), walked around with just a cane, and even drove up until her death. It happened suddenly (I know that sounds weird since she was 94, but it was sudden), and it hit me and my whole family really hard. In May/June, my dad sent me an e-mail that my mother had been really discouraged that she had put on so much weight with the loss of her mom and really wanted to get healthy and he thought we should help (my mother is overweight, as is my dad and myself. But, of course, my older brother is tiny. Ha ha). So, we started MFP! When I weighed in I realized I had actually surpassed my starting weight at Weight Watchers from May 2009 by 15lbs! I've lost 13 lbs or so in like 14-15 weeks, I think? But I've taken a few "vacations" with the most recent one being nearly a month and lasting until yesterday!!! So, I'm back in it. School has started back up again and I'm destined to log in all my food, stay under my calorie goal, and get in 4 - 5 days of 30 minutes of serious cardio a week. I can do it, I did it in the summer, and I know I can do it again. And so can all of you!!! Best of luck, and I look forward to hearing your stories!0 -
I decided to lose weight after struggling to start a family for more than a year. We finally have an appointment with an infertility specialist on November 2 and I know that he is going to "suggest" that I lose weight. I figured that if he is going to say it, I should at least be able to say that I have started on my own. So my first goal is to lose 10 pounds for this appointment and then hopefully another 10 pounds before we go to St Maarten so that I look hawt in a bikini.0

A couple reasons that promted me to be here:
1. For my own personal hapiness- I am not happy with my weight, not comfortable with my body- I hate mirrors and I want to regain some self esteem
2. I now have a 5 month old daughter- she's my world- I don't want her to have the same struggles I have had in my life as a result of being over weight. Also I want to be able to keep up with her, play with her and do fun activities.
3. I am getting married in 2012 and I really don't want to look back at my pictures of my wedding day and be disappointed in my appearance!

1) Well, I'll start with my history first. I weighed the same (overweight) from age 12 to age 19 when I got pregnant with my twins. Since I had them, I have tried all sorts of diets (Atkins, South Beach, etc.). After my almost 3 year old was born, I went on WW with a friend at 6 weeks postpartum. In about a year or so, I lost 35 lbs and got to my lowest weight I can remember. Of course, as life goes, we found out we were pregnant again (oops!) and I had to stop. I ended up miscarrying that baby and got an IUD and since then I just gained weight at a crazy rate until I hit the point I was at. I tried to act like I was still following "points" trying to get it off, but in all actuality I could eat almost an entire pack of cookies from the grocery store 15 minutes away to my house. Finally, hubby asked for P90X and I ordered it. I was tired of how I felt, how lazy I had become, and what my life was and how I felt when I looked in the mirror.
2) I have been doing P90X for almost 6 months and I started Slim in 6 with a bunch of church ladies almost 4 weeks ago in the evening. So, hubby and I workout together in the morning. I need the accountability of workout partners, so this has been great. The past 72? days I have been using MFP and religiously tracking my food (I actually pre-plan it). I've lost 22 lbs so far which isn't bad considering I only lost 5 the first 90 days. i also got my bodybugg today (a belated birthday present) and I am eager to have that as a tool in my arsenal as well.

Im 21...turning 22 on october 11. I decided to start a diet because ive been getting really lazy...Ive played baseball and football most of my life so Ive always balanced eating and exercising without knowing it. I stopped about a 2 years ago and started to gradually gain weight. I am definitely not used to diets. My football coach would tell us to eat a lot so we could maintain our weight.. ...If anyone wouldn't mind helping me with dieting, plz add me. Thanks.0

Hi!
With my experience, DIETING doesn't work! I simply cut out junk food(all of it), fast food, soda etc. and I watch my portions. I make sure I enter everything I eat before I eat it. That way if it is going to add too many calories, I can cut it down a bit. Im a full time mom and a student so sometimes its hard for me to work out, but when I do manage to get to the gym, the first thing I do is cardio which Im sure you can appreciate being an athlete! But give it a shot and see if this works for you too! I hope I could be of some help!!! Good luck!0 -
i love this group! i'm new to MFP.... I'm 25 and just tired of being overweight... i'm on my way to becoming a diabetic, and I am SO scared that is going to happen to me. I have so many health problems that can be improved by losing weight, and I am engaged... i want to be a healthy bride!

When I was younger I was always chubby, but I played softball throughout junior high and high school, so playing and still eatting bad, kept me at being the same size. But then I left for college when I was 17, out of state. I definitely gained the Freshmen 15 plus alot more. The last year of college 2009 I tried to workout, but I always said I had too much work to do. Right after college I weighed in at 220, which was astounding to me, but I decided I would finally loose the weight now that college was over. During that summer I lost 20 lbs just walking and trying to eat less. Then in December 2009 I joined WW and lost 12 lbs, but I just stopped using it. Then in March a friend asked me to workout at the gym with her. I did and I loved it. It was finally motivation to workout, especially since I live in the desert, the only time to workout is in the early morning before the heat or after the sun sets, so at the gym I could actually go anytime and not die of heat stroke and they had classes. In June 2010 my roomie introduced me to MFP and I have been even more motivated since. So from MFP I have lost 15 more lbs. I look back and now my total weight loss is 47 lbs, i cannot believe I got so out of control. But I still have a long way to go. I am still motivated and I hope I can help get others motivated too! I now have helped to get my older sister to start at the gym again and I am trying to get my mom to want to lose the weight, she is my biggest reason, she has diabetes and I want her to be able to shed some weight and all the pills she takes.
So how have I been losing the weight? Well at the gym I love love taking the classes, they are fun, intense and you workout without realizing that an hr has already passed which is amazing especially SPIN! I also recently started working out in the morning and now a small workout at night and it has helped me boost in loosing weight. But I am all for loosing weight slowely and the healthy way! I am running my first 5k on Sept. 19th with my little sister! I am soo excited! Any questions feel free to ask!0 -

I love this thread and website and it's only my first day on here. I'm 23 and way too big. When I graduated college I was at my all time heaviest 230 pounds. When I started my job I ate healthy and almost immediately dropped the 30 and have been stuck at around 200 since. My goal is to be at 140 which according to my BMI is a healthy weight. I remember through high school I was always around 150-170 (which I wouldn't mind being back at). I need all the help I can get to stay focused.0
