Vegetarian diet and PCOS?

Hello to all. About 2-3 months ago I was officially diagnosed with PCOS (Poly-cystic Ovarian Syndrome). I was put on Metformin and that helped me lose about 6 pounds in a month, but it really hasn't helped since then. I was told to cut down on my carbs and such (which I sort of have, but not completely). I'm currently thinking of switching to a vegetarian diet, one that includes some dairy and possibly poultry. *Side note: my cousin told me that one of her close friends had PCOS and struggled with weight and she went vegetarian and it helped her lose a ton of weight and get rid of symptoms; that's where I'm getting the vegetarian idea from. So, have any women that have had or still have PCOS gone vegetarian and seen results? If so, what did you eat/did you exercise/how long did it take to see results? Thank you all in advance. xx

I can tell you No, I had the opposite experience and in the process ruined my thyroid from eating the soy that was recommended in the vegetarian way of eating.

I actually didn't have good luck with losing weight at all until I started sourcing out good quality protein sources in the form of free range eggs and chicken, grass fed beef, etc............grocery store meats were not doing me any good.
  • Thank you for telling your experience!:) Did you just eat mostly protein-rich foods and lose weight that way? Or did you also have other stuff included? (Not sure if I'm asking the proper stuff)

    Hi Kris!

I'm a PCOS success story - we caught it early, before I was overweight, about 15 years ago. I had a "full" diagnosis, with cysts in the ovaries and elevated androgens. My gyno read me the riot act and told me if I didn't start getting some exercise, I was going to go down a bad path. I took up running, and amazingly the PCOS went away. I was able to get pregnant easily, and my cycles are now usually around 29-32 days (from previously 38 to ????? days).

It's not completely gone, though. When it gets hot and my training volume goes down, I'll stop ovulating for a month. I usually miss my period in August.

I am a vegetarian, but I was since about two years after I started menstruating. So I don't think I can help with a before/after on that.

If you don't mind me asking, what symptoms did you have with the PCOS? I have been doing a little research on it because i have had inconsistent menstrual cycles for the past year or so (not on any birth control) I also gained a lot of weight quick and have had some acne problems recently that I never had before. I got a blood test done a few weeks ago and should be heading back to the doc for the results but i'm just nervous on the results. ....How did they diagnose you? Sorry to be nosy i'm just really interested and haven't met anyone who has had it just read lots of info online..
