Tired of the shakes, supplements, gimmick exercise programs

I count calories and exercise. That's it. Sometimes I feel alone. All these people who swear by this diet or this exercise program or this shake or this supplement. I like to keep it simple. Right now I walk or do $10 home dvds (or free streaming workouts) for exercise. I plan to continue doing so and upping my intensity and adding in weights. I don't drink any special shakes. I don't take any pills. And I've lost 13 lbs. and counting!

I've bought the expensive home DVD exercise programs and had the coaches tell me to buy their expensive shakes. I've paid a silly monthly fee to Weight Watchers just to log my food (like I do now). I've done low-carb, Paleo, Nutrisystem, you name it.. and clearly I didn't stick with it. I know this stuff works great for some people, but I'm just not sold.

I guess I just like to know there are others out there, like me, who just like to keep it simple and are still healthy.

For me, the most important thing is: Can you do it forever? If life makes your diet impossible, or if it has an end date, it's not going to work out as well. Calorie counting with exercise tends to work well because it's simple, as you mentioned, and is able to tolerate the ups and downs that life tends to throw at us.

I'm with you...simple but not necessarily easy.

I like to do outdoor running 3 seasons of the year, so I did invest in a good pair of running shoes. Other than that I bought one cheap DVD and have been using free On Demand exercise videos during this cold nasty winter. And I just count my calories and add some protein powder to my smoothies once in a while. I seem to get sucked into complex systems in the beginning, but I've learned over the past 6 months that in order for me to stick to it, it has to be simple.

I think that if you're a broke cheapskate, then paying hard earned money might help keep you honest. Fortunately for this broke cheapskate, using a free program and seeing results is just as good :)

I have never been one for gimmicks or fads, it's all about eating what fits into your daily needs and enjoying it all!

No one is simpler than me.
    Wait...

Okay, so I worded it that way on purpose.

I didn't use anything special for weight loss. I counted calories, ate food and lifted weights. Even now I only use a shake post workout because I lift on my lunch hour and can drink my lunch on the way back to work.

Yep. I eat regular foods - no special shakes or pills here. (Well, I do use a basic protein shake from time to time to help meet macro goals, but I think that's different than these plan shakes).

The only thing I pay for is $10 a month to access the weights and cardio equipment at the gym.

Besides whey protein shakes I eat real food, I go to the free gym at work, I follow a fitness program for equestrians from a book that was $14 on Amazon, I run 3 seasons of the year. But right now it's so cold I can't even go to the gym so I am doing free stuff at home on the internet. Granted I do have some Zumba and one Shaun T dvd set (nobody's perfect).

Like you I've tried WW, Nutrisystem, about 20 different "pill of the moment" pills, South Beach, Zone, plus who know how many more fad diets and I never stuck with them. I'd probably have my student loans paid off with all that wasted money.

So here I am, I got serious last Memorial day. Now I invest in good running shoes, hand weights and a yoga mat when mine wears out. So you are not alone.

I have tried just about every diet out there. Spent thousands of dollars only to be sitting at 100 pounds overweight. NOTHING has worked as well as just counting my calories and exercising. I do try to eat very little processed food (what some call eating clean) but that is related to more of an overall desire to eat more fruits and veggies and get less pesticides and what not. SImple, simple concept but very hard to do. =0))

I'm with you. I purchased two DVDs to use at home, I use YouTube for other workouts, the gym in my complex is free, and I count calories. I've been approached to try various shakes and supplements but I want to do it this way instead.

Ha about the student loans. That's probably right. I've spent enough to at least make a good payment towards them for sure.
