biggest loser...i want to win!

I'm participating in a 'biggest loser' type contest...and i really want to win! i'm about 100 pounds overweight after having 4 kids in 4 years. i'm finally to the point that i'm not pregnant or breastfeeding. i can focus a bit on myself and i desperately want to lose weight.

I guess my question is how to lose a lot of weight quickly. I know that's what we all want, but if I win, I get almost $300! so i'm wanting to work really hard during the contest, get a jump start on my weight loss, and win the money. it's only for 8 weeks, then i want to slow down my weight loss to a more manageable rate and continue to lose.

so is the best approach to really limit my calories? i lost 6 pounds last week, but it was on a pretty low calorie diet and i added about 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day. i would love to keep losing around 6 pounds a week. i know it's not healthy long term, but for a few weeks? what do you think?

Screw the contest and the $300.00....
Change your habits and do it the right way, losing the weight and keeping it off will be your biggest reward.

I wouldnt look at the competition side in all honesty. Ive done several 12 week competitions before but my focus is always on the bigger competition about getting to goal for life. Lose weight in a healthy more...eat less...move more...get enough sleep.

Track your calories don't limit them - try and stay at or close to the calories set by MFP as that is already a deficit. Exercise and eat back some of those calories. Drink plenty of water. Remember that a healthy weight loss is 1-2 lbs per week but you do have a bit to lose so numbers could drop a little more quickly.

Just remember your body needs fuel so if you are exercising lots you need to make sure you are eating enough. Cutting calories and exercising without refueling your body will backfire on you.

You should try the advocare herbal cleanse! its a GREAT way to lose weight, the good healthy way. advocare is BIG on eating 3-5 small meals a day! I LOVE IT! I have lost 45 pounds on advocare since august!

Whatever you decide to do why would you decide to spend money on this in order to win a contest. I have lost over 49 lbs since August just doing it the MFP way, eating their recommended calories and eating back a large portion of exercise calories. Cost me £10.00 for the kitchen scales.

Edited to add That also seems like an advertising pitch to me

OP, cleanses are a waste of your money. Don't bother.

Which do you want more - to be healthy or to have $300? I don't know about you but a life time of healthy is worth far more than $300 to me.

    Calorie deficit=weight loss
A 6 pound per week loss is not sustainable and you know this. I understand you want the $300, but it is best to set reasonable goals. A good place to start is to read this link and all of the links in it:

Do not try that advocare stuff, (or any other product that promises magical results) You do not need a cleanse because our bodies do that by themselves, which is why we poop and pee.

You've answered your own question. It's not healthy, and it will merely result in a rebound gain when you up your intake again and go for normal lost. You're not going to feel good while you're doing it. I'd be surprised if you have energy to keep exercising on a very low calorie intake. Not to mention that you're depriving your body's vital systems of much-needed nourishment. 6lbs a week is an unheard-of rate of loss. It is not sustainable.

I think you know what I think.

    A - I am not a Cleanse person. I think they are a waste.
B - $300 is pennies in the long run of life, but if that is the spark that gets you started then go for it. I doubt 6 lbs. a week is really sustainable, you could be the exception, but... Our bodies will eventually react to quick changes. But a week or two, if it helps then great. Exercise is great, but healthy eating is a HUGE part of the equation too. And it is a combination of eating properly, exercise, and proper rest. Figure out your daily calories burned and then set a food goal. Track your calories, but track your fat, Carb and protein intake as well. Keep up the exercising too. It sounds like it is working.
And everybody's calorie need is different, now is that 1200, 2000, 2700, everyone is different. (Though I do not recommend going below 1200, your body likely will go into starvation mode. I know several weight loss drinks that hype that number and it is not good.)

Like I said, if it is the spark then great. Track your food. Track your exercise. And TRACK it DAILY!!! MPF is good for that.

And see where you turn out. Though do not get frustrated if week two or three drop from six to only a pound or two, that is still success. 1) most contests like that with co-workers (non-gym sponsored) do not have many successes, and ten to twenty pounds could win it, 2) health is not a sprint, but a lifestyle. And if you drop 25 or 30 lbs., but do not win the cash, you are still a winner in the BIG picture of life, and off to a good start.

    Good Luck!!!
