Lab methods using DEXA scans or BodPod are probably the most definitive, skinfold thickness by calipers and electrical impedance testers on scales are more readily available. Posting shirtless photos in appropriate places will get you estimates too.
My scales seem to move in the right direction and were in line with the one BodPod measure I've had.0 -
I use the high quality calipers. They are very accurate.0

I track body fat percentage and athletic performance.0 -
IMO it depends on how much body fat your holding at the time. Generally people with a high % body fat can track weight loss simply by via scales or how they look/feel in their clothing. At a high % of body fat your body prefers to buns fat over muscle. Its not until you get down into a lower % of body fat that your body will attempt to switch to burning muscle for energy.
Then it's important to track BF via testing to make sure you're losing body fat % and not muscle. The best way to test for this is a whole entire bunch of specalised machinery, since not many people have access to this kind of testing i'd say go to a Personal trainer or fitness professional and get them to test using Body Fat Callipers.0
