Hi everyone

I took the plunge and joined a gym today. I know I will feel abit self conciencious but hey I'm there for me and no one else. What I want to know is how do I calculate how many calories I will burn during a work out so I can log them on MFP. My first gym induction and programme starts on Friday so wish me luck.

What kind of workout are you planning to do?

Not sure yet have to go on friday and the trainer is doing a plan for me.
  • Ask your trainer at the session. If you're using the cardio machines, most will calculate the calories for you, you just put in your weight.

I don't tend to count calories from weights, I consider them 'bonus' calories that don't go towards my daily totals.

If you're feeling a bit awkward about going the first time, tell your trainer you want a free weights programme (barbell/dumbells) - that means you'll get all your awkwardness out of the way first time round (with the bonus of coaching on form).

I had to deal with first time gym awkwardness then later on awkwardness at having to step into the weights area.

Whatever you do underestimate calories burned to avoid disappointment. I have read websites about weights who advise 1 cal lost per rep but to be honest it is all subjective.
