What is my goal?

hey guys,
I've been going to the gym now for around 4 months and I'm starting to plan my goals for the next year or so. The only issue being I do not know what I should aim for. I am male, 18, 5'10 and around 178lbs (78kg)
I would describe myself still as "skinny fat" However since going to the gym I have made a lot of strength and muscle gains.
I currently do a split of back and bi's, chest and tri's, Legs and shoulders then I rest a day. I haven't been controlling my diet properly due to being stuck between wanting to get bigger and want to get properly ripped.
My question is to the gym vets out there.. Should my main focus be to cut down so my body fat percentage is 8-12%? Or should I try put on as much mass as possible in my beginner stages of this lifestyle?
As for why I do this. Its to help me generally in life with strength and endurance and obviously to look good.
Any replies/advice would be appreciated
