what is.... protein powder? O_O

I live in the Philippines and i first heard about protein powder by going through the posts in MFP.
What the heck is protein powder? How does it taste? is it particularly expensive?

More importantly, seeing as I have never encountered here in the Philippines:
Is there a substitute for it that I can easily find?
Can I make it myself?
If not, what food can I eat instead of this?
[Note, please, North American products are particularly hard to find here, and if I do find them, they would probably cost a lot...]

Thanks in advance for those who are going to answer :D

There are lots of different types (whey, soy etc) and you dont need them, its just another way of getting adequate protein :)

I use Maxi-muscle strawberry powder (as suggested above because it's an easy way to get a protein source into my breakfast which was generally higher in carbs than I wanted and eating eggs every day has a rather unpleasant effect on me).
I mix half a scoop with about 700ml of water, or with 100g of yogurt. Can't take a full scoop or less water as it tastes rank (don't know about other powders if they have a better taste or not).
Know a lot of people that mix it with eggs and oatmeal to make protein pancakes (not tried this myself as not convinced that it would even be edible if I tried to make them)!!
