Calorie Deficit

I don't consider myself a newbie anymore since I have been at this for 6 months. I have read so many conflicting opinions about calories in/out. I have been sticking to about 1400 cal daily. Do our bodies figure out our routines and adjust accordingly? If so, how often should I have more/less calories? Or just stick to the 1400 and see what happens?

I am with you.. been on here for over a year and lost weight great.. but I don't like eating 1400 cals. I bought a bodymedia to track my daily burn so I know exactly how much I can eat. According to this I can eat about 2000 cals a day and still have a great deficit. I find I burn about 2700-3200 calories a day just depending on the day.

I have only lost a lb since I started it a almost 2 weeks ago with no gain so I am hoping my body is adjusting to the new calorie intake.

I've been finding that doing my TDEE - 15% or so has really helped. My plan is to adjust it for every 5 lbs I've lost or so, or if I'm finding that I'm at a plateau for a while. Hope this helps
  • Your body does not adjust to routines. You adjust your routine to your body. As you lose weight, you need X amount to maintain vs X amount to lose. The lowest possible caloric intake any person at any weight should have is 1200. That is just to keep your body functioning properly & is not keeping any exercise in mind.

I think that you have to allow yourself some room for adjustment when you hit your plateaus , which you are sure to experience. This adjustment can be diet or exercise. Allow yourself some room to decrease your carbs and fats. Allow yourself some room to increase the frequency/intensity of your cardio. Be patient and taper your routine along with your weight loss. Some people start with super low calories and cardio 6 days a week and hit a wall having left themselves little to no room for adjustment. Hope that helps.

yes our body adapts to the calorie input/calorie output you are doing its called plateau, if you are changing a 'variable' on your routine you should be able to pin point where to adjust, if it was me i will deduct a further 150 calories from carbs, or 150 calorie burn from exercise/cardio, run that for a week or two and see if there's any changes.... IF YES, DONT CHANGE ANYTHING, IF NO, adjust again, you keep doing that until you hit your target. Obviously at 1400 calories i presumed you dont have enough carbs to cut down to so i guess the next option is to up your energy expenditure by 150-300 calorie burn.
