I have a black thumb. At the moment, I'm as proud as punch that my dwarf lemon has new leaves and branches and 4 lemons the size of golf balls. Everything else is dead.

I have tried over the last two summers to grow tomatoes, chard, strawberries, peppers and herbs, but I don't have much luck. I'm afraid to put them in my own soil because I'm worried about lead contamination from years ago painting the fence surrounding the yard. I try to grow in pots, but get such a puny crop that I'm wondering if it's worth the effort this year. I have to admit, though, that the strawberries are to DIE for!! I can't even bear to look at strawberries in the market anymore! They are imposters, for sure.

How about putting in raised beds or container gardening? I admit that I've had to go through the soil in my beds really carefully and pull out all the old rubbish (plastic, metal, glass and rubble). But I figure I'll only ever have to do it once, so it's not such a chore. If chemicals are your problem I would probably go for raised beds if you can find someone wanting rid of clean soil, putting in an extension, swimming pool or something.
