Don't believe the hype. Protein powders for women are a gimmick. They are EXACTLY the same as ones "aimed at males" but have pretty pink packaging, a women on the front of the box and usually charge 4x the amount of normal protein powder. There's no magic ingredient in them that varies in any which way.

Just check the nutritional content of each one and see which one works better for your needs.

I use bulkpowders Pure Whey Protein in banana that has about 131kcals per 30g with 23.2g of protein and less than 4g of carbs and fat. A 1kg pack of banana flavour cost me £15.79 +pp which is one of the cheapest I could find. A few of my friends also swear by myprotein which I think has a similar nutritional value and price.

Protein shakes are a supplement though, not a magic way to lose weight. I fit one shake into my calorie count for the day, usually after a workout to help my muscles recover. I lift heavy weights 3 times a week and once or twice a week I'll do a 20 minute HIIT on the stationary bike or treadmill. No pounds yet, but I can feel my muscles tightening and strengthening and that works for me!

Just look for a good quality powder with whey or casein as the main ingredient. Don't buy the powders that are specifically for women because they are either exactly the same or less inferior to all the others just, like katylil said, in a pretty pink package and more expensive.

I'm not sure the OP was asking about protein powders specifically geared toward women, just giving some information about herself.

Be careful with going too cheap with protein powders. Some brands I've read a lot about on here are out of my budget, but I definitely made a mistake buying Target's Market Pantry Whey Powder. It was less than $20 for a giant tub, but it clumps like crazy no matter how much I shake it up or even blend it. It's really gross to have to chew your protein shake!

If you're looking for something to mix with fruit for a smoothie, I'd recommend Manitoba Harvest Hemp Pro 70. I used to get it from Amazon for less than $20 for a one-pound container. It works great in smoothies as well as for baking. The only reason I stopped buying it is because I wanted to use a powder I could just mix with water or milk, and the Hemp Pro 70 doesn't taste too good on its own.

You don't need a certain kind for women. I would only buy protein powder if you are struggling to meet your protein goal through normal food. Nothing wrong with supplementing, but there's no benefit to getting it from powder over getting it from food.

I can't give a specific recommendation based on price, but look for ones with a high ratio of protein to calories. The only one I've tried so far is Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard whey, and I really like it for the taste and its nutritional profile.

    $20 for 1lb?

that's 2x the price of Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey, which is a well respected powder used by lots of folks.

Why do you think women need different protein powder to men? Men and women eat the same food, only the quantity of calories needs to vary, in that on average men are bigger and have more lean body mass than women (but if weight and lean body mass are equal between an individual man and an individual woman, then calories would be too)

Protein is protein. Protein powder contains protein. Both men and women need protein.

So just choose any reasonably good quality protein powder, and don't worry about gender differences. If your goal is fat loss, then protein isolate (e.g. whey isolate) is what you want, because that just contains protein with only the bare minimum amount of fat and carbs. Look for one that has the most protein for the least calories. Grams of carbs/and or fat should be in single low digits or zero. (you probably won't find one that's zero for both carbs or fat, but 4g or less is good)

^^ Yup. My boyfriend and I share the same protein, I only use it for breakfast shakes to break the fast a nights sleeping creates. We use "body Fortress Super advanced whey vanilla" Got it at Walmart for less than $20 I believe.

I get my girl protein powder at Target. 2lb EAS brand for 20 bucks!! Even comes in a purple tub.
Seriously tho, gender specific protein powders are not necessary.

I use Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey protein, usually in the Rich Chocolate but they have a lot of other flavors. It's not "cheap" but it's reasonably priced, and if you keep an eye on somewhere like bodybuilding.com they have sales that come up pretty regularly.
