Gas/stomach cramps from protein bars?

I tried a new type of protein bars today (I had two. Bad plan) and now my stomach is a huge mess... I'm having massing gas cramps.

Any tip to get rid of them, short of passing gas a lot? Ugh!!!

I had this reaction to whey protein powder, so I just don't consume it anymore. You said "new type", maybe stick to the ones that didn't give you these issues?

Oh yeah. I'm finishing the ones I have (one at a time) and then I'm done. It's too bad because they are delicious, but... ugggggh.

Still in for some advice, lol. It's painful. I think tonight is chicken and rice...

    GasX, Maalox.

It might be allergy to whey or, if it has sugar alcohols they are notoriously bad for this...

I usually have no problems with Quest bars. So it's kinda odd.

Thanks for the link. Been drinking peppermint tea and it seems to help a bit. Next step is baking soda if I'm still not well.

I have this reaction from soy protein isolate, and from sugar alcohols. There are few bars I can handle! Check to see what is different- it also could be that you can handle one, but not two. My advice: long walks outdoors! :embarassed:

I actually took a 45 minutes walk and it didn't help one bit. The tea seemed to do the trick though!

I have the same problem with the Atkins protein bars but am perfectly fine with Quest. A lot of the other bars use sugar alcohols and I found that is what sets me off.

Me, too. Actually I have more digestive issues than just gas with both of those and it's really severe with certain sugar alcohols. Maltitol, I'm looking at you!

I was just reminded of that yesterday when I had one of those NuGo bars. No sugar alcohols, but the protein is soy isolate. I was not a happy camper for most of the night.

If it was quest bars it may be from the fiber.

I had same reaction to whey based bars....which sucks because I have a soy intolerance as well :/ No bars for me lol.

Read the ingredients... My guess is that they likely contain sugar alcohol, which is a laxative. Sugar alcohol is also known as maltitol, sorbitol, mannitol, lactitol, and xylitol. Some people are very sensitive to even a small amount. Sadly, many low carb/no sugar added/sugar free snacks have this in it.
