Winter Slump

I could use some motivation.

I am doing well on improving my diet and am finding myself eating less and being less hungry,,,, and thats great.

But today I woke up, sat on a couch, drove to school, sat down for two hours, drove home, and napped for three hours. And it dawns on me that I am way more inactive that I was just a few months ago.

Before the freezing temps, I was easily getting 10,000 steps a day because I walked my dog on longer walks and walked to school and back (1.5 miles away). Now I drive everywhere - its cold and a bit miserable outside, the roads are less safe to walk on due to ice, and I have two night classes a week and prefer not to walk home...

So what I need is some motivational tips to get back into activity mode. I can't go running, cus of bad knees, but I'm sure there are lots of things I can do.... I just need alittle push.

Remind yourself that summer bodies are made in the winter.

I hear ya. My favorite exercise is running, and now with winter, I am so out of shape. It just hasn't been safe most of this winter to hit the pavement. I have a couple of exercise DVDs (and there's always YouTube), but my mom moved in with us temporarily a couple of months ago, and she's stuck at home just like me, and I'm not the type to exercise in front of an audience (small house). Not sure what to do besides take advantage of ANY opportunity when she's not at home (on a day I have off) to squeeze in a workout. Wish I had a treadmill at least.

If walking is your main form of exercise because of your knees, go to your local hockey/sports arena/community centre (whatever it is) and do laps around the rink. In our rec centre they installed rubber on the concrete because a lot of people use it for this. 5 laps around our rink is 1 K and 8 laps is 1 mile. There are stairs that can be incorporated to add to the workout. It usually takes me about a half hour to walk 2 miles.

You could pick up some hand weights and find a simple workout online that won't bother your knees. Do some yoga or pilates and just do what you can if something hurts your knees stop (or don't do) that particular move and do the next one.

Good luck OP - I get it, it's damn cold where I live too.
