How long does it take to get used to your new lifestyle?

Hey pals,

I just started this yesterday and I had a great day. I did very well and had no trouble completing the day. However, today was much different. I felt hungry all day long even after I ate. I came out under still, but I felt rather miserable. How long will it take for my body to adjust? I used to eat a ton of carbs on a daily basis, and now that I cut down, I feel starving.

Thanks for any advice,

Court

  • Hi Courtney!

Very important to eat smaller snacks in between your meals. You had previously been in a lifestyle that got you to this point, and it wasn't overnight. So, give your body a bit of a chance to get used to this new lifestyle! You will get to a point that you actually *gasp!* look forward to logging in all your food and exercise!

Welcome and good luck on your journey! And don't forget to drink your water!!! :drinker:

  • only took me about a week! that first week kinda sucked and i was just BARELY eating under my calories (including my exercise calories) and i still felt like i was starving. but after a week i stopped feeling that way and even started having fun cutting down my food and my calories. doesnt take that long and once you get to feeling like your new lower calories is the norm for you, you'll be amazed at how much you used to eat!

good luck on your weight loss journey! :drinker:

I was hungry at first but then I started eating smaller meals every 2-3 hours and now I'm never hungry, but if I Don't eat my snack I end up pigging out at the next meal and can't seem to get full. It took me a couple of weeks to get used to not eating 3 huge meals a day.
    Goodluck

I definitely 2nd the eating healthy snacks in between meals. My favorites are fruit and nuts. Also, make sure you're eating quality calories, now that you're limiting your calories to lose weight. Try to avoid the processed foods and eat lots of fresh fruits/veggies, legumes, lean protein, nuts/seeds, and low-fat dairy. Healthy oils like olive oil are great to use while cooking. I find that eating the right foods makes ALL the difference in how satisfied I am on a lower-calorie diet.

Also, make sure you exercise and log those exercise calories - you should be eating at least some of those back (I aim for 50-75%) and this really helps keep me satisfied, too. I have a base goal of 1200 cal/day, but I normally can eat 1200-1600 depending on the exercise I did for the day.

It took me a couple weeks to settle into my new routine, but after that it was pretty easy going. Now I don't have to think so hard about what I'm going to buy at the grocery store. Good luck!

Carbs are tough. Because they turn into sugar in your body, your body gets used to what you give it and adapts to the conditions it's exposed to. I know for me, when I first started to lower my carb intake I felt hungry constantly. I just couldn't get that super-full satisfied feeling I was used to. Now I don't miss it so much, though I currently use a diet called carbohydrate cycling, where I actually have a high-carb day every 4-6 days. It's a nice break, but I'm so used to my 100-150 grams of carbs a day at this point that it actually takes planning and effort to get the 300+ grams I want on a high-carb day.

TBH, MFP actually gives you way to many carbs in my opinion.

You WILL get used to this, but more importantly your body will adapt. It will get used to it for you, which makes things easier day to day.

It took me about a week, maybe two, to get used to the reduction in calories. The first few days are the hardest. Hang in there!

I eat every 4 hours, not a lot some fruit a few chicken breast, and protien shakes, I even eat just before bed, I keep it light air popped popcorn or yogurt. It took about 2 weeks to reset my body I had to set clock on the cell but after 2 weeks my body let me know it was time to fill the tank.

    Don't forget lots of water

I am going to hang in there. I am determined this time around not to give up! :ohwell: I just want my body to stop feeling starved. I ate well today, so I shouldn't be feeling the way I do right now. My body is sending my brain the wrong signals. I am not hungry. LOL:blushing:

It's going to be ok don't make it such a fight have something to eat something small some fruit or cheese, you are making a lifestyle change a little at time works best lose the small battles to win the war if that makes sence, when I'm hungry i eat, try not to let you mind and body fight each other because then you don't win calm your mind your body will follow

    OMG - A week, really?

    Dude.

That first time it took me like 3 months to get used to it. This second go at it has me back in the swing in just a few days, but that first try on my own took me FOREVER, or so it seems. The worst was around my moon-time when all I wanted was grease and chocolate. I had train out of that and it took three whole tries.
