I recommend elliptical, recumbent bike, adaptive motion machine or arc trainer.

Any kind of biking (not too much resistance). Swimming.
Don't do the treadmill or anything else if you have pain.

    Good luck,

  • Pilates, yoga both are options that focus on strengthening the core which is essential in any fitness program So keep doing those exercises til the knees feel better. Elliptical machines are designed so you don't overwork joints. Also a good option.

I have no idea what is causing your knee pain but I ice regularly. there are 'sleeves' you can buy from pharmacies - they have velcro straps so you can strap them (filled with cold ice packs) around any limb that needs ice. It's daily for me and will be for life. Who cares if it means I can continue to get stronger.

Also, when I do 'squats' which are great for making the legs stronger, I have learned that the knees must not 'go past the toes' I have to see the toes as I squat. That is to protect the knees from doing all the work - which causes damage.

    Hope that helps

Thank you everyone for some great info. This is for my sister's condition, we both started MFP January 27, 2014 & see is not able to do the treadmill due to pain in her knees, so I wanted some options that she can do daily without missing a workout.
