Stonglifts 5X5 successes - I'm interested

Hi all! So after reading and posting about this yesterday, I'm interested in starting the 5X5 program. My problem is I have no clue where to start. I would consider myself fairly weak, so I'm not sure if I would be able to lift a barbell without weights on it. Could I start with using dumbbells and work my way up?

Any advice that you have on the program would be great. I would also love to see your stats from before you started the program to where you are know, out of curiosity.

And for those that need/want to know my stats and whatnot, I'm 5'4" and currently 210 lbs, my goal weight is within 140-150 lbs. I workout at least twice a week at the gym, doing machine weights, free weights, abs, and light cardio.

I saw your thread on the Stronglifts group discussion board and replied a little bit ago. Forgive me if I'm confused, but on that thread, you said you didn't have access to a gym. Lots of people will be happy to give advice, but we need to know whether to base it on whether or not you have access to a gym or gym equipment.

My ex wanted to try the bench press, but couldn't lift the weight of the bar. We used fixed weight barbells, which are available in most good-sized gyms and go as low as 20 lbs. They look like this:
