Stonglifts 5X5 successes - I'm interested

Hi all! So after reading and posting about this yesterday, I'm interested in starting the 5X5 program. My problem is I have no clue where to start. I would consider myself fairly weak, so I'm not sure if I would be able to lift a barbell without weights on it. Could I start with using dumbbells and work my way up?
Any advice that you have on the program would be great. I would also love to see your stats from before you started the program to where you are know, out of curiosity.
And for those that need/want to know my stats and whatnot, I'm 5'4" and currently 210 lbs, my goal weight is within 140-150 lbs. I workout at least twice a week at the gym, doing machine weights, free weights, abs, and light cardio.

I saw your thread on the Stronglifts group discussion board and replied a little bit ago. Forgive me if I'm confused, but on that thread, you said you didn't have access to a gym. Lots of people will be happy to give advice, but we need to know whether to base it on whether or not you have access to a gym or gym equipment.0 -
My ex wanted to try the bench press, but couldn't lift the weight of the bar. We used fixed weight barbells, which are available in most good-sized gyms and go as low as 20 lbs. They look like this:
