Expired Protein Powder?

I recently told my father I was looking to buy some protein powder because I don't often get my required protein and I have a green smoothie almost everyday and thought it would be a good addition.

He gave me his protein powder because he no longer uses it, however it expired 12/31/13. So it is about a month expired. It is also almost full and I imagine the one batch will last me several months. I am only using it to sorta fill in the gaps so I don't really see myself using an entire scoop (25g of protein), but rather maybe half a scoop a day.

I was wondering if it would be safe to use for the next several months or if I should continue shopping around for protein powder.

I was wondering if anybody had recommendations on a good vanilla flavored protein powder?

    I'm sure it's just fine.

Hmm.. what's in protein powder to go bad? Not much.

Use your nose. If it smells funky, don't use it.

If not.. half the time (or more) "best by" dates are only on there to move product, and because people, now, won't buy anythign without an date on it.

Vinegar pretty much NEVER goes bad. Yet most of it has a "best by" date on it.

As much as I'd like to say it's PROBABLY fine... If you have the money to get new stuff, I would. It's probably fine but you wouldn't drink expired milk or eat rotten eggs or take expired antibiotics. Nice of your dad to think of it but it needs to be tossed.

lol okay well if we are talking expiration dates - I always take my yogurt, etc to work when it's expired - there are a couple of guys there who will eat it even a month after if it still smells good and looks good.

I think vitamins lose some of their potency but can still be used.

Protein powder I guess it depends on the ingredients but I don't know for sure - if it's only a month past I would use it personally if it was 6 months past I would probably chuck it

Does it say "use by" or "best before"? those are the terms we have in the UK.

"Use by" is usually reserved for perishables like meat, fish and vegetables. "Best before" is used as a quality guarantee up until that date, and things stamped with a "best before" date are fine to eat after that... like eggs, yoghurt, cheese, etc.

I would hazard a guess that it's fine... but if it tastes/smells bad or doesn't mix properly, I wouldn't continue to use it.
