Weighing Pasta.

According to the food label it's 156 cal per 100g, is that cooked weight or dry weight before cooking?

Replies

  • Must be the cooked weight, because pasta usually has a lot more calories. Before cooking it should be something around 300-350 cal per 100g.

So I have to weigh the Pasta once it's cooked to 100g?g

What I mean is do I weigh the Pasta dry to 100g before cooking to get the right portion size?

Yes, it's definintely the cooked weight. Odd that it doesn't specify!

Typically dry pasta is weighed uncooked and one serving is 2 oz or 56g and around 200 calories (a bit more or less depending on brand, ingredients)

If you've got the calorie values for the dry pasta its better to weigh it first. Cooked pasta will weigh more the longer its cooked as it's absorbs more water. I tend to overcook it a bit so I feel like I'm having more!

Depends on the pasta. Can you tell us the brand or show us the label? But it SOUNDS like the cooked weight.

Well it says allow 100g per person so I weighed it dry to 100g but didn't know you had to weigh it cooked to get the right portion size.
  • Huh? Pasta is weighed uncooked. Unless otherwise specified as far as I've known. Barilla is typically 56g for 200 calories.

Just looked on the cooking instructions it says allow 100g per person so it must mean dry weight.
