calorie differences

I have some questions I hope you all can help answer.
Why do pistachios in the shell have more calories than shelled ones? It's not like you would eat the shell.
How come cumcumbers have calories but pickles don't?
These are just a couple of examples that I have run into. I have found a few things that don't make sense. Why one version of a food as more/less calories than another.

I find strange situations like that too lol. I know when it comes to pickles, the calories are based on a small serving of cucumber. They actually do have calories but since one serving is under five calories, then can legally list it as zero. It is the same with artificial sweeteners and "calorie free" cooking sprays and butters. As for pistachios, it could depend on the serving sizes you are comparing. I have found it to be the opposite. Shelled nuts should have more calories by volume since you would throw away half the contents of one cup of unshelled nuts but you would eat the entire cup of shelled nuts. That is strange if the package says the opposite!0
