High fat/Low carb days and Low fat/High carb days!

Hi everyone!

I went down from 9st 12lb to 6st 6lb. At 4ft 11 this size suits my frame quite well. When I was at my lowest of 6st6lb my stomach was flat. It now seems to be the only part of me that bulges out! I recently put back on near a stone I think . . I'm somewhere between 7st - 7st 6lb so im trying to loose weight again. I know you cannot just target the belly area when trying to loose fat (which is rather annoying because the added weight on my legs and such is fine! Just my stomach) so this is what I'm doing at the moment . . .

I'm having 1600 calories on training days when I go Boxing which is 3 days a week. These are my High Carb Low Fat days. So I'm having 160g carbs, 160g protein and 40g fat

On non- training days I'm having 1300 calories which is High Fat Low Carb days. On these days I have 120g Protein, 60g Carbs and 53g Fat. This is because I was told on non exercise days you don't need as many carbs for energy as you are not expending them so your body will use your fat intake instead.

Does this seem right or does it seems like I'm eating too much? I feel nothing is changing . . .
Any advice very much welcomed thank you!

The body repairs on rest days and carbs are protein sparing. I understand what your trying to accomplish, but it's a lot of work and it may not be doing what you think it''s doing.

You don't "need" carbs for energy. It's just that if you ate them then that is exactly where body will take energy first. So on training days it's not "necessary" to have more carbs or even carbs at all, it just depends on what kind of diet you're on.

If you consistently ate a lot of carbs then your body will use carbs for energy. If you consistently ate no carbs at all then your body will use fat for energy instead. If you consistently ate small amounts of carbs then your body will need less carbs for energy.

In the end of a day your body adapts to the way you ate and will find the way how to get energy, if you stay consistent with your diet and don't change it too much to let it adapt. You don't have to adjust your carbs for energy, let your body adjust to your carbs instead then energy for workouts will come.

I used to ate high carb diet personally. When I was dumb and thought that I need it for energy. Then I switched to high protein and high fat diet with very little carbs. Because that's how I can ate smaller portions and not feel too full and bloated when I used to ate a lot of carbs, that's just my preferred way of eating - small high calorie portions cos I hate feeling too full. For first couple of weeks after I switched I had like no energy without carbs but now it's all back to normal. So your body will get used to amounts of carbs you ate, you don't have to adjust your carbs for that.

Yeah I saw some experiments with just eating carbs and eating fat and how they used the energy. . So yeah I understand my body would use fat for energy as well if the carbs were not there to use. So if I want more drastic results should my carbs be less than 160g a day on training days? As it does seem like a lot of carbs that aren't necessary . . .

Please eat carbs. 160 might be too much, might be just enough. But if you're training, I wouldn't personally go "low carb." There's so many woman on our league that go "low carb" without telling the training staff and coaches, then they injure themselves because they lose focus at the wrong times, get dizzy, faint, etc. I carry granola bars and fruit leather to give to anyone who suddenly looks pale and distant-looking at training.

If you do start cutting carbs while in training, just do it slowly, ok? Let your body adjust to the new sources of energy.

yeah I went low carb before and weight shedded fast. But now its more the remaining fat I have on my stomach over my abs that I need to get rid of and as everyone says abs are made in the kitchen . . . So it may be best I cut my carbs slightly more to use the fat to burn instead. But I always have a wholewheat carb meal 2 hours or so before a workout (I workout around 6:30pm and cant eat after 4pm or I feel like im gonna throw it back up when im working out!) I love my oatmeal and such though and really helps me 1st thing in the morning.

You can use only as much as you can use - there is maximum amount body can use. If you go higher and still see no difference in energy levels, which you are saying that you don't, then I would say your body can't utilize them all for energy, otherwise you would feel it, and there is no point doing this. And that's the whole thing energy is all about - to feel it, so no point. Extra carbs will either be stored as fat, stored as glycogen or burned to meet your calorie needs.

That makes a lot of sense thanks :D there is just soooo much information out there on different ways to achieve it is difficult to know which one will suit my body. Like I said I lost weight before so I know what I am doing but last time I lost more fat than needed and now ive put it back on but seems only around my middle! SO what is considered really low carb then? Like I said my non training days I have 60g. This is difficult sometimes only because I like cereals! Otherwise I eat a lot of eggs, tuna, haddock, prawns, vegis e.t.c. anyway so i'm okay cutting back. Think I may cut my carbs to 120g and see how that goes. Even knock my fat back a bit.

If anyone is interested please feel free to take a look at my food diary and you can see my intakes. Thanks again!
