Eat more foods that you prepare yourself, and fewer things from boxes. Morton's sells something called Lite Salt, and there's also No Salt which are salt alternatives that use potassium chloride. Tastes exactly the same, but it's lower in sodium.

I've read a couple of papers regarding sodium count in regards to heart health, and I've seen a couple of conflicting things. In my personal experience, however, my BP and HR are much better when I'm below 1500mg per day. Monitor your body and know what your food does to you. That's step one.

For some people it is not a problem, but for others it is. My husband is very healthy and fit but he has to watch his sodium intake because he has a sensitivity to salt that causes higher than normal blood pressure. Unchecked that can become a very serious issue, so it's important. We both try to stay under all of the time. You do need some sodium in your diet but perhaps consider cutting back on certain things that have a lot of sodium...restaurant food in general (Subway is one seemingly healthy option that can have TONS of sodium), certain condiments, cheeses, canned vegetables and beans (both have LOADS of added salt in most cases), frozen packaged processed foods, etc. I'm not saying avoid that stuff altogether, just limit your consumption a bit. We buy Hunt's low sodium tomato sauce and add our own spices and sautéed onion, pepper, etc...delicious sauce with far less sodium than jarred pasta and pizza sauce. Hope this helps a little.
