Medication + PCOS

I'm not going to write about my life story and pity myself anymore than I already have.
I weight 230 LB, I'm 5'6 3/4" in height.
I have polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
I recently got off abilify and I take zoloft (50 mg).
Been taking both of them for 4-5 years.
I've tried losing weight. It feels hopeless though.
Any advice?

Thank you.

You cal lose weight with PCOS - I have - I have lost 73 kilos/160 pounds. I find exercise is a huge component for me. I do a mix of cardio and strength training. I also find things like calorie cycling (eating different calorie levels on different days) helps me.

    Best of luck :)

I took Metformin for PCOS and lost weight on it.

I just lose weight kind of slowly with my PCOS, with the beginning being particularly slow, but taking Metformin for a month really moved the pounds! I didn't expect that. It was too hard on my stomach while I have to take Rx iron, but I hope to get back on it once my iron dose is lowered.

Otherwise, I had great success with a low Glycemic Index sort of diet back in the day. I don't have to be that strict to lose weight, but if I want loss at a regular rate, I do have to watch the insulin resistance one way or another. That also explains why I've always had to exercise to get a reasonable diet to work -- exercise sensitizes insulin.
  • When I was on abilify (30mg daily) I gained a lot of weight that would not budge. I went from 120lbs to 170 in a year or so. After stopping taking it I lost weight without trying, but I was also extremely depressed and not eating much.

I don't know much about PCOS, but abilify definitely made me gain weight that refused to be lost until after I was taken off. The weight loss was gradual, but I dropped down to 140 before my meds got switched again.

Now that you're off of it you might have different results. :)
