For me a few things:
#1 I bought a treadmill makes it easier to NOT make excuses to run because of weather.
#2 I bought REAL running shoes - so then i felt obligated to run
#3 I bought a new outfit to run in so i looked official
SINCE then... I've been training for a marathon (and subsequently downgraded to a half). I have a 10 mile run this weekend0 -
Oh yeah... and my watch. It tracks GPS so I know how far I've fun, and calories burned and time.... good stuff...0

I found a barely used elliptical machine. Being really self-conscious I can't bring myself to go to a gym so having the elliptical makes working out good for me. I currently have it aimed at my tv so being able to watch movies or tv is great.0

I bought a treadmill. I balked at the price and there are free treadmills in my office gym. Plus I can walk and run outside, again for free, unless the roads are horribly icy.
I use that treadmill 4 to 6 times per week. I walk uphill, I sprint, I take slow steady runs, and sometimes i just stroll while watching a movie. it seems that I like using a treadmill, but I don't like spending more time at the office nor do I like walking outside for a plethora of reasons. So in my case, it was an excellent decision.0
