Are there good calories?

I do very good as far as calorie intake all day. Dinner, not so good. My day is like this; Breakfast, an equate Ultra weight loss shake 180 calories and a cup of coffee. Lunch, same shake and a Yoplait yogurt 170 calories. Snack, sometimes before lunch, after the gym, or both an Organic trail mix honey roasted snack bar 190 calories. Dinner, whatever is made. I try to stay with a lot of greens, but if I had to guess I would say 800 to 1,000 calories. I'm 45 and was a firefighter my whole life and in very good shape until I got hurt. I was always VERY active. I have a large frame and in good health I was 205lbs. Not a cake kind of guy. When everybody else is having ice cream, I'm having another plate of meat or chicken. After reading so many confusing articles on line, I started having ESA Soy Protein shakes (180 calories a shake) I had 2 today and it says to have 3. Eating the good stuff (not dinner) should I worry about the calories? Or no because it's good calories? If there is such a thing. And how do I stop the hunger after dinner? Even if I feel over full after I have dinner, and hr later I'm so hungry. Please help me lol

Your current plan will set you up for malnutrition and a lot of lean body mass loss (muscle, tissue, etc..). And no there is no such thing as good food or bad food. Only foods that support your lifestyle and fitness goals. To give you a point of reference, I am 31 years old, 5'11, 185 lbs, desk job and workout 5-6 hours a week. I eat 2400-2600 calories and average 1 lb per week.

Cals in vs cals out....if you are hungry, try eating more protein dense food, or fiber food. Plus, looks like you need some bacon in your diet

Calories are just calories, not good or bad, just a unit of measure. Just like there are no good or bad inches, or ounces, there are just inches and ounces.

Also, you stop the hunger by eating real food. Protein shakes are to supplement dietary gaps (to increase your protein consumption). I wouldn't be surprised if you could eat another 1600+ calories and still lose weight.

Focus more on calories and nutritional value in foods, rather than attaching a label to them. I won't get into whether some foods can be "bad" as a general matter, but don't feel that you can eat as much as you want of "good" foods. That's a fallacy. It's easy for some people to tell them the housemade granola bar they got from whole foods is "good" food because it doesn't have gluten in it or for some other reason, but the reality is if that granola bar pushes you over your calories for the day, it can stall your weight loss or lead to weight gain. It's important that you track everything, "good" and "bad", and focus on your nutritional and calorie goals each day.

As for feeling full after dinner, make sure your dinner includes plenty of protein and make sure you're getting a reasonable number of calories each day.

I would say there are good calories and bad calories. Something high in calories can come with a lot of good nutrients while other foods high in calories can be empty in nutrients or high in bad fats, and sugars.

I like my breakfast shake, but mine are home made. I'm not a fan of the can because they seem to be largely sugar and it's an issue for me. I think you might be more satisfied spreading those calories throughout the day. Try getting some fat in your dinner, at 100 calories a serving it helps with the satiety factor.

Yes, there are good calories and bad ones! Good ones like these come from two tea spoon of olive oil, a meat of any kind with less percentage of fat, fat free cheese or milk,..ect. Where bad calories could be a piece of cake, fried meat, over taking energy drinks and shakes! I would suggest you change one of the three drinks you intake to a sandwich with a fat free cheese and add some vegetables slices!
Those shakes are mostly high in calories and people who used them a lot most of them gained the weight back as soon as they starts to eat real food!

Weight loss shake, coffee, a cereal bar and dinner, that is all you eat?

Why not ditch those shaked and just eat a nice breakfast of oatmeal or something. Try to get some fruits in there, and more protein and fats. More real food.

There is nothing wrong with any of those foods or full fat cheese, pending they don't become a staple in your diet and do not make you exceed your caloric goals. You can still eat cake, fried foods, ice cream, etc.. and still hit macronutrient goals and success. Below is a good example.

I don't agree with this - fats are not good or bad. Calories are not good or bad, sugars are not good or bad.

You really need fats. Fat free cheese tastes like disappointment, and is not necessary.

    To the firefighter:

I agree with psulemon, eat real food. Those shakes are not your friends. Instead have a couple eggs and bacon and toast, or a grilled tuna with cheese sandwich with veggies and bread with some sort of fiber. Make some spaghetti or some chicken with bbq sauce. Make a chicken ceasar salad, or a meatloaf. BLT, or something that is real food.

You can' t live on those shakes, and you aren't supposed to even try. Learn to make three or four meals you really like. Next month, learn to make another one or two. You really need a variety of different foods for optimal health.

Please lose the shakes - you aren't learning anything good by using them.

    Calories matter.
Put it this way; If you over eat by, let's say, 1000 calories, it can be from eating candy and burgers or from eating wholegrains and veggies, you'll still have overeaten. You'll still put on weight/stall your loss just the same. But the point of healthier calories is that they provide nutrients and actually help you to feel full and satisfied.

Dear, I think olive oil is good fat! isn't it? and I'm not saying don't eat cake or what so ever! I'm giving the gentleman an example! Personally I love cream cheese and the ones with less fat or fat free taste better for me! Also, you'll benefit more from a good sandwich like subway one where they include good bread, meat and vggies! I prefer a home made!
My sister lost 40 lbs on shakes & protein and she gained everything back fast right after she ate real food!

FYI, when foods removed fat, they replace it with sugar. So your macronutrient break out might suffer a little. Adding fats (and really transfat is the only bad fat) will increase satiety over more carbs (which sugar is a carb). But if you like the taste and still hit your other goals, then it's all good.
  • Thank you all. opened my eyes to a lot of good changes I need to make.
  • Thank you and I am going to stop the drinks. I'll start having oatmeal for breakfast and find something good for lunch. I just got "The primal blueprint cookbook" so I'm going to start using it. The other night I made the Italian pot roast from this cookbook and it was really good so I'll start reading the whole thing. Thanks again for the help.

If I had to guess, I'd say you need to spread the calories a little more evenly during the day.

What are goals? Do you use a food scale? And what is your exercise routine?
