Hi darmitage
I have just returned to exercise after a 9 month break and use a stationary bike at my gym - my favourite piece of equipment at the moment. I found that even after nine months break my heart rate rose very quickly at quite a low resistance. After a month I am able to work at a higher rate of resistance to reach the same heart rate [ around 135 bpm for my age is a cardio workout for me!] So my answer would be that the important thing is to have your heart rate up at a pace you feel comfortable - and yes breaking a sweat - at a low resistance initially, then increasing the resistance as you become accustomed to it and your fitness improves. Hope that makes sense - maybe someone else with a better understanding of fitness techniques can also give you an answer. Good luck and great that you are making a commitment to exercise x0
