there's some evidence that people who lost a lot of weight have lower metabolic rates than people of the same weight who never got fat in the first place.0

It would still be calories in vs calories out though, just that some people have higher BMRs than others. Weight gain more complex than just repopulating your fat reserves though. Just like many of us lose 4-5 lb in the first week due to water/glycogen loss the opposite is also true. We arel also very good at storing any energy that is spare, for most of out existence I am sure humans would need to hold on to as much energy as possible so we didn't die in the winter.
I was watching Horizon this week about exersise, it suggest the obvious - that everyone can boost their TDEE by trying to do a little more all the time. If you stand instead of sit you burn 10-15% more calories. Walk as much as you can, move as much as you can etc. It could be that as well as higher BMRs thinner people also are slightly more active all the time.0 -

weight loss is calories in vs out it's that easy.
metabolism, bmr, TDEE are all different for different people.
As you gain weight your bmr goes up due to the excess calories burned due to the weight. In other words you burn more just to move around because you have to exert more effort to move.
After losing weight esp 25kg (appx 50lbs) yes you will find it easy to gain weight back if you aren't counting the calories and eating at your TDEE.
Losing the weight is only one step in the journey...maintenance is the next and if you aren't prepared for that well...hello excess weight.0 -
I exercise a lot more now, so actually I eat about the same as i did when I was fatter, but I am slimmer as I have raised my TDEE.0

What he said.
Also, slowly ramp up from the deficit to maintenance.0 -

I'd like to see that evidence...
I remember reading something like that on a forum post and thought it was rubbish...as Tavisstock said they eat the same as their TDEE has been raised...which comes from the fitness aspect of life.0
